no love from guys

From the looks of the reviews on here, it appears that The Bletchley Circle gets no love from men. As a guy who enjoyed it I find that sad.

Not true, I loved it too :)

I just saw it and I'm a guy and I loved it. I find the women insanely brilliant and enjoyed the pace and performances. I'm a little confused about finding season 2. Any ideas?

reply

I thought it was excellent.

I watched it when it first aired on PBS, and I loved it. It's literally on the air as I write this.

I thought cast was fantastic, and while people have debated about historical accuracy and sexism/misogyny on this forum, I thought the story was excellent.

Definately looking forward to Series Two!

Another male fan here. I think it's a wonderful series. It keeps getting better too.

I'm a guy, and I definitely enjoyed it.

Another chap! I am already a fan of this setting/era/genre. It has everything I like: murder-mystery, WWII background/setting (i.e. post-war London), the costumes, women - big fan of Julie Graham and Rachael Stirling. I also liked the Canadian series Bomb Girls, another series that probably has a female majority audience.

Double Yea! Real men aren't threatened by or put off by smart and capable women. Great to see your posts here, guys!

Well I'm a guy and I really liked it..Alot...I will say , and this has nothing to do with liking the story, and that is the common thread in all stories about woman of this or nearly any era, and that is how truely disturbing the way men treat woman is, across the board. Obviously the abuse that has not changed in all this time is difficult, but it is the common attitude and disregard for women that men are taught to have and works so well for men to feel better about themselves when it of course does just the opposite. The police with the attitude that they are more like silly children with a special talent that only goes so far etc..it must sting quite a bit for men who harbor those ideas and feelings about women to see it right infront of their faces. I never got that. My mom was a quiet meek woman, and under the thumb of my dad, but I saw her run the buisness, know the score and while hopelessly bought into the whole idea of being less than, was at the same time doing everything 100% -inspite of it., That is brave and humble and all kinds of things that I did not see from the men around me. They pretended to be in control, but could not tie their shoes without their woman..still is like that today for many!
What this story did for showing how awful men treat women, even good men is very telling...aside from all that..it was a good suspence, crime drama..well worth reccomending!

I have only just started watching the series but the one thing I would like to see more of is just as there are good women behind or in the background of great men it should be shown more often that there are men whom stand behind/support great woman as well.

Whenever there seems to be something made of women and there great accomplishments the writers seem to want to make it all about them and tend to leave out most of the guys whom support them in the background.

They could show guys as a positive thing to get behind there wives.

In the case of this show you have to take into account the era and the fact the women weren't allowed to tell anyone what they did during the war. The men were completely in the dark as to the great accomplishments the women achieved.

It was also set in the '50's. Men thought much differently about the capabilities of women back then than they do now. In a period piece such as this, there's a very good reason why it was all about the women without the supportive men. Supportive men were scarce when it came to women and their role outside the house, especially if it conflicted with their thinking that women were for cooking, cleaning, and raising the kids.

I'm glad to read that men enjoyed this show. You made a good point that women run the show behind the scenes. I've also seen how women can abuse their power as well, so it's not just men who are abusive.

I love British shows, but I don't usually recommend them to men. They want to watch gore, adventure, and bombshells. British shows focus on writing, and they are usually evocative of what it's like to be a woman. Their stories are about women who focus on romance and emotional bonds. Many stories, including Blockbusters and the eponymous Bond 007, are about men who focus on action and sexual conquests.

Not only did I greatly enjoy the show but I'll also add that I'm so glad to see they are all made up to be rather plain. Had this been an American series the women would have been uncommonly attractive. I love that Susan, for one, was quite ordinary. It did seem to me, though, that they prettied them up a bit in the second season. That's one of the reason I preferred the first season.
