1950's Terminolgy?

In a Scene where Susan and her family are driven home in an army Car, her son asks why and her husband says 'Your Mother is a 'Hero'. Wouldn't he have said 'Heroine'? There must be many more words and phrases used in the series that are common place today but would not have been used back then, wouldn't there?
