Hellboy 2019's Disastrous Failure: The Feel Good Story of the Year, So Far

I, for one, am glad that this thing bombed

I think Neil Marhsall is a very talented director/writer. The Descent and Centurion are awesome movies. So I feel bad that he will have such a black mark on his resume. And I like David Harbour as an actor, even though his real-life personality annoys me a little

But, overall, I am glad that this thing flopped, and you all should be too. They took the franchise away from a very talented visionary in del Toro, for no reason other than they thought they could make more money without him

And the creative direction that these execs thought would make them rich was a HUGE insult to movie fans. Forget the beautiful art design, the character development, the heartfelt story of the originals. Let's just turn Hellboy into Deadpool. Make it R-rated and gory and keep the one-liners coming. Audiences don't care about story, they just want CGI action mixed with snappy humor. Because everything should be like The Avengers, right?

They made the same mistake that Warner Bros. made with Justice League. A jarringly sharp turn in the previously established tone of the franchise in order to pander to fans of Marvel and Fox films. It is so blatant, that any true movie lover should feel insulted. Cheers to another egg in the face of studio execs who think they know what we want better than we do

reply

110%. The trailers inspired no confidence for me but I was appalled to hear how bad it was and how poorly Marshall was treated during filming. Shame on Universal.

reply

“The studios” took the franchise away from Guillermo del Toro because Hellboy 1 & 2 didn’t make that much money.

From the way people whine on the internet, you’d be fooled into thinking del Toro’s films were actually popular at the time.

If more fans had turned up at the cinemas, del Toro could have made Hellboy 3.

reply

Should I have started a campaign to get more people to go to the movies 10-15 years ago? I don't understand your point.

I, personally, enjoyed del Toro's Hellboy films. I can't help it if not enough people went to go watch them. Not every franchise is meant to rake in billions. They turned a profit, that's more than this film will probably be able to say

Looking at your post history, pretty much every comment you make is negative, so its pretty funny to see you comment on whining fans. You're pretty much the whiniest bitch on here

reply

That was a mic drop moment!! You took no prisoners!!

reply

Thanks! Can't believe this guy has almost 1,000 comments. What a waste of bandwidth

reply

Dude, it’s obvious that you just used a sock account to give yourself a pat on the back.

That is embarrassing...

“That was a mic drop moment!! You took no prisoners!!”

LOL

reply

Like I would bother to do that just to respond to a bitter little guy like you

Sucks that you are such a contrarian than you have never had anybody agree with you before and find it impossible that such a thing could happen. I dunno anything about Tazerface. Looking at his post history, he seems to be a Republican, which I am not

reply

My point isn’t hard to understand but maybe you need new glasses, so I’ll repeat it again in caps.

AUDIENCES DIDN’T TURN UP TO WATCH DEL TORO’S HELLBOY MOVIES.

I’m not sure how you can blame the studios for trying a different approach with an intellectual property instead of pursuing a losing formula. del Toro had two shots and he failed. Your fanboy-ish slobbering over “the beautiful art design” and “the heartfelt story” of the films, 15 years after the fact, isn’t going to make the studios money.

Side note: I don’t need to creep back through your posting history to know you’re a bitch. Your butthurt response speaks volumes.

reply

I"m butt-hurt? Your entire existence is basically centered around being a butt-hurt asshole. You go out of your way to bring people down. It's pathetic and sad

And your point is worthless. I could waste energy getting into an argument with you, but I think people like you suffer more when somebody doesn't give them the attention they desperately crave

reply

“And your point is worthless. I could waste energy getting into an argument with you, but...”

But... you’ve got nothing.

Go back to breathing heavily over other people’s posting histories, creeper

LOL

You have 786 posts. You are too pathetic for words to even describe

I waited for Hellboy to come out on DVD or Blu-ray to watch the first one I believe it was, but went and saw the sequel at a bargain theater about 11 or 12 years ago. I liked the way Del Toro did the films. I just do not like it when the film company or companies will take a film that was made 10 or 15 years ago and try to reboot it with other people directing and producing the films.

reply

I got the impression there was a lot of studio interference on this. Probably not entirely Marshall's fault. Like you said, he has some good films on his resume.

reply

Yup

This movie serves as a cautionary tale for talented filmmakers looking to make a jump to big-budget movies

Most of Marshall's best work is small in scale and somewhat aimed toward a niche audience. And the fact that he's served as co-writer for his best work shows us that he is at his best when he has more control

But idiot producers nowadays think they can be like Kevin Feige or Simon Kinberg and oversee these superhero movies and treat directors like their puppets. Superhero movies are not a good genre for filmmakers like Marshall right now. There's too many cooks in all of these productions

reply

"They made the same mistake that Warner Bros. made with Justice League. A jarringly sharp turn in the previously established tone of the franchise in order to pander to fans of Marvel and Fox films. It is so blatant, that any true movie lover should feel insulted."

Amen.

And studio interference was brutal from what I read. Some anonymous source said producers were on set overriding Marshall's instructions, and gave the script a revision.

The reason also why it might have bombed was due in part that the film was only 15 years old since the original was made. Why do that when they should have waited at least 20 or 30 years to remake the film. I just do not like that concept of Hollywood executives who think that they can make a film better than the original. I have a script that would be excellent for Hollywood to look at, but have not seen any bites for it. It would be a horror film with dark comedy to the film.

reply

Hollywood has no interest in great scripts. They only have an interest in franchises that have great potential for big profits. Do not feel discouraged. Keep working on your craft. Independent movies and short films are the best path into the Hollywood system. No one will provide financing for an unproven idea in today's climate. But, then again, even proven franchises can bomb. So keep doing you. If you are lucky and talented enough then you will overcome the suffocating bureaucracy that is Hollywood. Best of luck to you, friend

reply

Thank you for the encouragement cyberbob. It is not easy because I have tried the fund raising to raise funds for a teaser trailer and tried to fully fund the film idea. My thought was to do it independently. I was not too happy that I did not raise the goal for a teaser trailer or fund for a film. It is very hard work and like you said just keep digging at it until findly something has to give you know.

reply

The path to success in Hollywood is extremely tough. Not even worth getting your hopes up, if I'm being totally honest. If you really wrote a great script, that is reward enough in itself, IMO. Many good artists never make a living or make an impact on the greater art scene. Send me a copy of your script if you want. I will read it and give it my genuine feedback. Keep doing what you do. Don't base your self-worth and idea of success on whether your work gets bought and produced

Obviously, it is easier said than done when your pour your heart into a screenplay. I know it must hurt. But you cannot let this discourage you from making the best art that you can make. Hope you can succeed

reply

I do have it copyrighted already and still need to do some work on it to improve it. You can go on Facebook because I created a page there in the title of the film. It is called THE POSSESSION OF INNOCENCE. Yes a lot of hard work and I have had people look it over before in the past telling me what is wrong with it and what I need to do to correct it. I would love to get a teaser trailer made, but it is hard to do with very little money. I had a actor willing to do a role and he asked me if I was supplying the clothes for his character? I could easily go to Good Will and find some clothes, but I really do not want to spend money on clothes though.

I am still trying to figure out how to do a alley scene as low cost as possible even though I do need fog machines to create the effects that I would like. I was trying to go without needing a generator to film it.

reply

I am glad it failed also. Del Toro should have been able to finish the trilogy, but instead the studios though they knew better. Ha Ha someone is getting fired for this debacle. Marshall should be forgiven for this failure, because I am sure the studio did their best to interfere with his vision for this retooling of Hellboy.

reply

I agree with your stance that they turned this into Deadpool.
I can't really elaborate it, but big budgeted movies these days seem to try to imitate the Marvel movies in their "easiness", simplistic moral and sentimental characters, which is not a good thing imo.
