Good 'western' genre but breaks no new ground. (mild SPOILERS)

The best things about this movie are the cinematography, in the Canadian Rockies, and the actors. First time dad and son Sutherland worked in the same movie and the characters are father-son. Each is very good in their roles. And the bad guys are really good as the bad guys.

But the theme isn't novel, hotshot gunslinger wants to put down his guns for good but the bad guys won't let that stick. The bad guys do some incredibly stupid and inflammatory things. So the only real question is will he survive after he cleans up the town?

For those of us who enjoy this genre it is a pretty good one.

I completely agree with your assessment. I guess there's not a whole lot happening in dusty gunslinger towns but the genre is badly in need of something new and different. Great to see father and son but the story was a 100% rehash of several movies that have already traveled this exact road.

true... well traveled road.

but the father son relationship was nice to see.
well done by the Sutherlands.

I agree....but it did go a slightly different rout

The guy did not get the girl

There was the whole switch from, Dad knows best....to.....no dad...some times you have to kill....everybody......

The final show down from the two best of the best...did not happen...and it was a novel way to go about that...

Then it went straight up young guns with the ending voice over where you here the love of his life died, and he showed up with the ribbon..i was waiting to find out he scribbled pals on the southern gentleman's grave.

Yes, his surviving the inevitable shootout was exactly the question in my mind at the end. Walking away from that without the slightest wound was kind of a stretch for me. But then, maybe it was a suggestion of providence which was hinted at in the church scene where he was questioning God about his purpose. There is a scripture in the Bible which says that " The Lord uses the wicked to slay the wicked. "

It was okay entertainment as a free dvd rental from my local library.
