So no sherriff...

Mayor or deputy to stop these thugs from comitting murder and grand larceny???

reply

You must have dozed off because they said the sherif ran away during the night because the crooks scared him off and they didn't think they could find anyone who would take the job.

If you actually watched the movie and paid attention you'd have heard them explain why there's no sheriff.

Plus pops Sutherland told the guys outside the church that he had sent to the governor (?) to send a marshal.

Law enforcers were few and far between back then.

I just realized you added mayor and deputy. Not to be too big a smart-ass, but that's cute. I don't know what your typical western mayor or deputy might have done. A mayor would be essentially powerless in that scenario, and most sheriff's deputies were deputies for a reason and one alone against a power-backed gang of thugs would probably not have been too successful.

Perhaps a Deputy US Marshal could be effective, but your standard-issue town level deputy would have most likely lit out with the sheriff.

There's a reason why guys like Earp and Hickok were so renowned: not many could handle business the way they could. So to put an Earp styled lawman in every western would seem a little disproportionate.

Well said.
