Was the ending of the shoot-out original or not?

I thought "Forsaken" was a better-than-average western, and I stayed with it till the end.

But I have read some comments here, where you guys are saying it is boring because it's all been done before. Excuse me, but I have seen a lot of westerns and I never saw that kind of ending to the inevitable "shoot-out" scene. Isn't this kind of original? The hired hit man faces our hero in the middle of the street in front of the saloon, very James Arness-style. In this iteration, the hit-man is not your average bad guy, but a somewhat cultured professional who takes his occupation seriously. He is even gentlemanly and has a good vocabulary. That, right there, is original, I think. But then....

Our hero Kiefer, who is obviously not up to a gun fight with this pro hit man, devises a "way out" that, to me, is truly original. First time I have ever seen that way out. Is it not original to you guys?

Cheers,
Dan

You raise some good points. I thought this film was really good - particularly the original ending - and am surprised it's not rated higher.

Right on. I loved it.

It was an interesting twist to the " James Arness-style, " which is a romanticized Hollywood version of gunfights but not historically accurate.
Most were of the ambush style, being shot in the back one of the most common.
I get it though; portraying it realistically would lose audience appeal quickly.
