Everyone in this movie is awful

Perhaps that's the point.

It's hard to have sympathy for one single person here. Nick's a dumbass who cheats on his wife even after she's missing, Amy is a batshit woman scorned, Desi a manipulative control freak, Rhonda a blinders-on cop who is just after Nick, Tanner a slick willy lawyer, Ellen the Nancy Grace of the movie...

it really made the ending so important. Perhaps, in the end, they deserved each other.

It is the point. Sometimes you are clearly not supposed to have sympathy or root for any of the characters. But they can still be compelling to watch.

Well said 👍

Rhonda was one of the only people willing to give Nick the benefit of the doubt. Even though the evidence was seemingly pointing to Nick, she could tell something wasn't right. Also, who doesn't want a sister like Margo or someone like Tanner on your side?

Yeah, I don't think anyone was supposed to feel sympathy for Ellen.

The ginger cat was nice. I hope he was OK. I always worry about animals/pets in fillums!

I watched the director's commentary for this movie, and at some point David Fincher brought up the cat and described how good he was for continuity in shooting scenes for this movie. They could have been shooting for 10 to 12 hours and that cat would stay rooted in one spot.
