Why didn't they release it THIS weekend?

I don't know why they selected a January release? They could've pushed it to summer 2016 if they're so afraid of Star Wars. I don't believe they're trying to coincide it with Chinese New Year. China is a big market but still the main market remains the USA.

This is the holiday season so FAMILIES can go see FAMILY movies. This weekend and last weekend were no major releases so they missed out on a huge opportunity. On Thanksgiving weekend Hunger Games was already out 2 weeks. This does not make sense. In January parents will be busy again so they won't be able to take their kids. January is the kiss of death for movies.

I think they wanted to release it in the least crowded market possible. It's current release date makes it so that it is the only family flick for a month, meaning if a family is going to see a movie, they are going to see this.

Yes but a family is free during the holiday season and in January they'll just tell their little ones to wait for DVD. Not that I care for little ones as they make too much noise during a movie, it's just that low box office might kill the franchise.
