The whole "Mexico is the center of the universe" thing right at the beginning, it was dumb, almost threw me out of the film, lovely animation flick after that. Anybody else fund this irksome?

Yeah it was definitely said tongue-in-cheek. Also, possibly a poke at how Americans always think like the US is the middle of the universe.

I thought it was funny. You're allowed to think the place you came from is the most important. See: New York, L.A., East Coast in general, Ireland, Italy, France, etc. etc. etc.
