Do you think Maria overreacted to Joaquin tell her she was pretty?

The scene I am referring to is early in the movie, when they are talking together at dinner. Joaquin then becomes infatuated with Maria and constantly mumbles that she's pretty while staring into her eyes, only for her to get angry and leave. Obviously Joaquin could have been more respectful about it, but do you feel like Maria overreacted?

reply

Yeah. I was quite surprised by that

Clark: Jonathan Kent; isn't it a little past your bedtime?

reply

That wasn't why she got angry. She got angry when the conversation continued from that point and it seemed like Joaquin only valued her for her looks.

If you're happy and you know it, go sit in the corner and think about your life.

reply

Yeah. I think she was rude!

reply

Maria was unnecessarily rude period in the movie, but we're supposed to see that as being "strong" and "feisty".

Angharad, is that the wind, or just a furious fixation?

reply

She got frustrated because that was basically all that he kept saying about her. He was completely focused on her looks and she wanted someone to see more of her than that because she was a smart, well educated, strong woman who quite clearly didn't want to marry someone who had very traditional views and values about women and marriage (and when she mentioned how she bet he'd like his wife to just wait on him hand and foot and be at his beckon call, he agreed and said he'd like that). I think she appreciated and liked his first compliment about her looks but then when he kept going on about them and ignoring every aspect of her actual personality, then she got annoyed. So I don't think she overreacted.

The beautiful and sexy girls I know, usually complain about being complimented too much. They get irritated and angry, roll their eyes etc.
