Fraser's motivation...? (Spoilers)

I enjoyed this - obviously flaws with the science and some of the rationale etcetera, but willing to overlook as it was gripping.

However, I really didn't understand why Fraser suddenly was all for going straight to the surface and forfeiting the gold (and being arrested for murder - hello!?!) I didn't buy he felt guilty because the old beardy guy died, because we had just seen him CRYING WITH JOY as he stared at the gold with childish delight - didn't seem too guilty then. It was literally the scene before. Then suddenly he has a complete change of heart? I figured it might be because he realised the Russians were going to kill him the minute they surfaced? Otherwise... Seemed very out of character.

Is it possible Fraser pulled a Daffy Duck ("Mine! Mine! All mine!) kind of thing? Maybe he thought he'd come back later, alone or whatever, and claim it all for himself?

Or maybe Fraser really felt bad about losing Peters? He said he hadn't lost a man yet.

It's hard to pin down his motive, since he's known to be a little crazy.

reply

I didn`t really understand what he was trying to do either.A nasty piece of work suddenly turns into a compassionate caring person when he loses Peters and then he inexplicably "spanners" the poor Russian forfeiting any chance of the gold(which was his sole motivation).Think the writers had the bends.

reply

Yeah really why would he care about loosing the old guy when he had just killed one man cold-heartedly at the beginning and then just after that, a second one, even more brutally! I didn't understand his motive either. I think they could have made it if he wasn't so stupid. Oh well, he died for his stupidity! And that other traitor too.

I wish I enjoyed this movie. And I almost did. Jude Law is great, the Russians in this movie is great and I really liked the part they brought to the submarine. It shows the brilliant minds Russians have to make anything work and I believed it. Frazer is where the movie fails so hard and I guess if you can understand anything of this totally insane mans mind, you can like the movie. In my opinion Frazer is this movies weak link.

Spoiler alert!
Frazer is the one who sinks a Russian and sinks the sub, twice, and also the guy who sink's this movie. I believe the movie tried and fails at the theme greed and the way Frazer gets his way, or even a place in that crew, is just not believable. I could look away from any faults this movie had technically if they had nailed the drama right, and my god they faild, and its Frazers fault, all of it. I'm a peaceful forgiving man, but after Frazers first kill all I would have done as a captain is send him out the torpedo tube (or let one of the Russians eat his liver) with no remorse, no regret and not whiteout loosing any sleep, completing the mission and be home for bed, greed or no greed.

they needed him as a diver to get the gold however

Thanks guys - glad I wasn't the only one baffled by this!

My take on Fraser was he was he was a psychopath, straight out of the manual. He's faking it when he's crying over Peters, because being all sad and stuff about that sort of thing is what other, normal people do. Just the same as he's faking it when he's crying about the engineer "hitting his head". Except the rest don't buy this time round. Initially, it was all about maximising his share of the loot but, when the personal risk was driven home to him, it was all about survival and to hell with any other consequences.

I remember in the movie one of the characters did say Fraser really is a psychopath. During the "meet the team" part where it shows them riding the bus together as they are named. They could have been making a joke, but they also could have been serious. Have to watch the movie again to be sure.

reply

Huh, Dec 3 again... anyways, you are right and slightly wrong. In the restaurant they talk about needing a diver. When fraser is named the response is "that guy is a psychopath" or something like that.
:D

Fraser wanting to go up, was a simple way of showing that the situation had indeed become so dire that even a flake like Fraser knew that it was time to quit. Getting the gold up had in fact finally become too risky and all that they could hope for at that point was to make it out of there with their asses in tact.

This also showed well just how far-
gone Jude's character became in his ability to think clearly anymore when weighing the risk against the reward.

OK, I don't care what Frazer's motivation was, how bad he was, how many he killed, why he changed his mind, or whether he ruined the movie. I thought he was HOT and could not peel my eyes from him. I might just have to watch this again, abysmal as it was.
