Season 3 spoiler question

Watching 20 minutes of season three and we first meet Rose. My wife says, "Ah-ha. I'll bet Rose is the mother of Olivia's baby". Is she correct?

reply

Yes, she is.

reply

What are you talking about? No she's not.

reply

I don't think she is either, but I'm prepared to be wrong.

reply

It appears that either Jason or James is trying to confuse me, or jerk my chain. I guess I'll just have to wait until the truth comes out, if it ever does.

Since my OP, we have watched five episodes of season three. The evidence so far:
(A) Rose has gone from nothing to becoming the most visible domestic.
(B) Rose admitted from the start that she had no references; a bit suspicious since it was never mentioned again after Olivia hired her.
(C) Rose was able to soothe the baby. Lots of people have that trait, so it's not really an indicator.
(D) At one point, the baby disappeared only to find that Rose had taken baby George to sleep with her.

All of these could be red herrings.

since this board is closing down .... a little bit of a spoiler. No, she's not the mother, but Regina converts her into an evil sidekick. Quite frankly I think she's deranged... just like the writers who have taken over this show that started out so well.

Thank you thank you thank you. Just when I thought it was just me...

Watcing the last series, I kept wondering if I'd lost my mind a few years ago thinking this show was a soapy but serious drama OR....OR...had it always been this strident and over the top cartoonish?

It's been so long, decided to revisit series 1 and 2 on Acorn. Sure, it had the DNA of a good soap, but it really was a cut above. Nothing was so over the top.

Then Regina arrived and it got stupid and cliched very fast with her evil grinning puss. By the end of the second series, with the arrival of "Grumpy Cat" Rene, well....

Things changed.

By the last series, it had completely gone off the rails.

Made me wonder what happened to that gentle drama I loved so much at the first. Something did--the writers lost their minds is the perfect explanation.

The best thing viewing series 1 again in fits and starts lately was validating why I'd liked it so much in the first place.

Because I really was questioning my sanity by the time the last series ended and Regina was on her rampage like some hideous cartoonish parody and Sarah turned into a scowling bore--wondered what I'd been wasting my time on all those years ago.

Sad.

reply

Thank you to you, too! Glad to know it's not just me.

Did you know it's been renewed for Season 5. ? God help us. Anyhow, I'm pleased for the actors who'll still have jobs. They deserve medals for soldiering thru the mess. -:)

reply

Brilliant! haha "Soldiering through this mess..." Love it.

The actors really are great and make watching some of the odd plot choices still enjoyable. I especially enjoy Sara Wiseman, as so much of her copious earlier work isn't really available world wide.

I love one of he posters last year who coined "Grumpy Cat" Rene. After he/she wrote that, it just was SO apt, I couldn't stop thinking that and laughing when his scenes arrived.

My other fave a poster came up with was "Dopey" for George--again apt for two reasons, he was taking "dope" and acting, well, dopey!

Poor Climo. Having to portray a guy who went from rather in control and dashing to some kind of skulking idiot who apparently for the sake of his political career ignored every horrific thing about Regina that he actually knew--including not listening to all the smart women in his family whose opinions you'd think he would believe?!

But no. He becomes power hungry and hooks up with Satan-ess herself spouting dopey platitudes about her loyalty. And that was only in series 3! haha

He just turned into an unlikeable selfish man who was using Regina (not that we would feel for her but his intentions were awful) and doing things powerful men do which isn't very flattering.

(And I loved the writers' ham handed Rene resolution. The man survives the Spanish Civil War, the Nazis hunt for Jews in Paris, being arrested for Resistance work, 6 years brain damaged and anonymous in a mental hospital post war but dies....getting out of bed??!!! Mwwwoah!!)

And why was he even getting out of bed in the first place? That made no sense whatsoever. It was very contrived--even the camera resting on the cigarettes of whatever couldn't explain away him rising from major surgery immediately to, what? Go sneak a cheeky ciggie across the room?

Bye Rene. Sorry, mate. But you were surplus to requirements--always.

By Series 4, even at the end The Big Dopey still only saw Regina as "ill" and called doctors--instead of the bloody hangman. He also did the wrong/selfish thing there, as well. He apparently put family reputation above the law, by not letting the law take her and do what they could to convict her of the Milly's poisoning. So, George calls doctors instead for committal, apparently choosing that secret scandal over the public one--for selfish reasons.

So, no justice for Milly. For heaven's sake. George turned into something almost as bad as Regina by then, it seemed. Just selfish to the core, hiding behind the "family" reputation again.

It did seem at the end of 4 they were tying all the threads in some ways that were strung in 1-4. And I read the next one will jump 5 years or so, so it will find our characters probably having moved along quite far in life doing different things (like Olivia and Anna).

It sounds like a welcome reboot. But as you said glad the actors have consistent paychecks from this--that's a good thing. And the scenery is still great.

But how at the end Sarah could even look at George and have any respect for that numptie, his being the dad notwithstanding, is beyond ludicrous.

Bring back Peg! One of the few in the entire series who is pure of heart and action! :-))))))))))))))))

When I started watching Series 3 I thought Brett Climo should have gone on strike when he got his script. But I couldn't justify asking such a sacrifice when I wouldn't even stop watching the show. (Plus,he's just so cute with those ears and that smile.-:)

Have you read Phazed-101's synopses of the episodes? They're hilarious and I will miss them. He/she is the one who came up with Grumpy Cat and Dopey. Also, EW (Evil Witch) for Regina... and cat's bum to describe her face. (The actress who plays Regina is really pretty so she gets an award for such a transformation). I'm a Sara Wiseman fan too.

reply

I thought it was EC (Evil Cow) for Regina??? When Phazed said there was a meadow and she heard mooing but didn't see Regina, well, I almost lost it laughing so hard.

Getting off subject somewhat, I am sorry to see IMDb is shutting the boards down. I am in the US and have to rely on Netflix for my APTCH fix. Another poster who lives in Wisconsin is very lucky his/her PBS airs the show. Very few US cities enjoy that privilege. Anyway, I have learned so much reading these boards (even reading back pages upon pages when I first started watching the series) and trying not to read spoilers TOO often. Thank you to all who have taken the time to add to this board.

shaler.....you are so right. Evil Cow is so much a better description... can't imagine how I confused it!

Are you able to stream programs? If so, do you know about Acorn TV? A subscription is 4.99 a month. It is where my friends and
I have been watching APTCH. Plus, it offers other British tv shows. Some new.. lots of golden oldies.

reply

Thanks for mentioning Acorn. No, I don't have it, have pondered getting it, but mostly cautious having heard bad reports of their abysmal customer service. I am on the fence, would love to have access to all the great British shows. Right now I get APTCH on Netflix disc but have to wait till the end of this month for season four.
