Gino

Is such a pig. Yeh, I know, I'm looking through this eras perspective, and not that era, but still. Pig.

reply

Aside from the era, his culture and all that, it's Anna who has done the dishonest thing. Take exception with Gino's insistence on children being the only thing etc., but Anna has committed a grave betrayal of trust.

She did not disclose her situation to him before they were married and entered into marriage knowing he wanted children and what it meant to him personally and his culture. It was cruel and selfish of her.

She misled him. She lied to get him. He has every right to feel betrayed by that lie, especially going into a marriage in the Catholic Church which is unbreakable in his world.

That kind of betrayal of trust rests at Anna's feet. "OH I just LOVED you SO much I I I I I I I...." I entered into a dishonest marriage with a huge lie at the core of it.

The point is he was never even given a chance to marry her for love only. He should have been able to make that choice and maybe he'd have done the same. She denied him that right.

Gino would be well shot of her.

reply

he has become such an unlikeable character

reply

Agreed. He was rude to James and to Anna too.

reply

I wrote the OP while watching the previous episode (before the last one that just aired), but still maintain he is such a pig. Anna is no better either, now that I know she withheld that info from him- Catholics are well known for their love of having big families, she knew that.

On another note (I know, I know, it's a plot point), how ridiculous that every TV character who suffers a miscarriage suddenly is unable to have any more children lol. In Anna's case, with it being her first pregnancy and her being so young, there's no reason she can't have kids, unless her uterus was half ripped out or something. Miscarriages are extremely common, as in 1 out of 4 pregnancies.

reply

I agree. Not with Gino being a pig (though I don't much like the character), but about Anna still possibly being able to have kids. I'm expecting that APTCH will show Anna being able to get pregnant in the end. Though it's going to be weird, as they are jumping ahead 4 years for season 5.

It does not help that he's ugly too. At least they should've cast an eye candy for us to look at.

I am hoping he is the one who can't have children because his sister had the mumps and perhaps he did too and was too stupid to know it....I do not like this role. He has no problems with religion when it comes to him having sex but everyone else is going to hell...typical..

reply

...exactly !!!...pre-marital sex with Anna and getting her pregnant - no problem for the devout, Catholic Italian boy - but for everyone else...he's a sanctimonious, rude, nasty, judgmental, biased idiot !!....ugh !!...he needed to take up with that annoying, stupid lackey Rose and leave Anna alone...she's better off without him anyway...

Finally! After all these years someone who has the same opinion I do of the Gino character! It's difficult to mention appearances on boards, because it's the eye of the beholder thing and people always line up on either side, "He's handsome!" "No, he's ugly." It's always a no-win.,

But...the first time I saw Gino I just thought, that's it? With all the absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous Italian men in Australia or elsewhere, they cast HIM? Really? It mind boggling-ly weird.

Why no tall, dark and handsome Italian stallion who can act? There was NOBODY handsome on the casting agent's rolls? Why?

He's tallish but scrawny and that day's growth, sexy on a lot of men, makes him look like an axe murderer. And, well, he's no oil painting is he?

Gino looks like he belongs on stage as a Shark thug in West Side Story who's most likely to stick a shiv into Tony's ribs in a street fight. He's scary looking in that role, not romantic.

Sorry but casting is about finding the right "look" isn't it? Acting is a harsh business, and can be brutal when casting for appearance to create a romantic duo.

I will admit I fast forwarded through every single Gino/Anna scene after the first few episodes in Series 1 through to the end of Series 4. And still understood the gist of their story. So, no loss, ha. Anna's overacting and Gino's creepy face were tailor made for the FF button. :-)))

reply

Oh dear, oh dear... we think too much alike! You've said what I've been afraid to say. I've seen photos of the actor out of character and he looks much more attractive than on the show. Maybe it's those sweat stained undershirts which seem to be his only clothes... other than that damned beige windbreaker he wears to dinner at Ash Park when all the other men are in suits. (And he DOES own a suit.. he wore it to church.)

reply

Oh yes, that jacket! Seeing him in that took me back...like 50+ years.

Back in the '50s and earlier, that kind of jacket was a kind of working class look.

Instead of a navy blazer or tweed sports jacket a white color fellow might wear, for working/blue collar class it was often that jacket instead--and usually in that buff colored tone. It was a looser, more casual look, but suitable for going out.

The costumer knows his/her stuff with period clothes (although I certainly can't speak for '50s Australia, just US), but that jacket immediately took me back!

The costumer seems to be setting Gino apart non-verbally by using that style.

reply

It is really a shame, that they just decided to make Gino such a jerk.
It is like they were trying to say "Girls, stay away from Italian guys! They are nothing but trouble!"

reply

I agree. He seemed rather pleasant at first, but as time went on he became less tolerant, although I agree Anna should have been straight with him. Not being able to have children is a pretty big deal.

reply

Sure, but it became clear why Anna kept that a secret.
It seems to me that she realized that Gino would react just like he did, so she didn't tell him.
Also, I'm not sure that Gino was mostly upset about his wife keeping a secret.
But it was more of a big deal to him, that he wasn't likely to get a son with Anna.
Because yes, it had to be a son too.
It is clear that he couldn't see a daughter as equally valuable.
But he could have stayed with Anna and adopted a boy from an orphanage, which is what Jack even suggested.
However, that was never an option to Gino either.
So yes, it is very hard to sympathize with him after that...

He is probably meant to be a typical Italian guy from his generation.
So I guess that he couldn't help doing most of the things, that he would do to Anna.
Then again, that makes it only worse when you think about it.
Because then, the message will be "WASP girls and Italian guys don't belong together".
