Woody in a non-Woody film

History has proven that Woody's roles in films he didn't write are weak, flat and boring. This film has a great cast, but already has mostly negative reviews. Why does Woody do it? It never works, and I am always disappointed. I may check it out, and if so will post my review/thoughts. It just looks and sounds boring over a beautiful NYC backdrop.

Au contraire. Woody's the best thing in it, and I'm not the only one. Go read Mick Lasalle's review in the SF Chronicle.

How many has Woody only acted in? Scenes From a Mall and Casino Royale ('67) are the only ones I can think of.

EDIT: He was an uncredited writer on Casino Royale.

I'm happiest...in the saddle.

The Front is a great film that Woody starred in and didn't write.

Bingo. I was just about to say that myself.

As for Fading Gigolo, I'd say it was pretty good, and Woody is a large part of what's good about it.

Here is my review. I actually liked Picking up the Pieces better

Agreed. I love The Front.

What about Play It Again, Sam? Ok Allen wrote the script but didn't direct the movie and still it's a comic masterpiece I think.

reply

The OP specifically said films that he didn't write.

reply

Trollish.

I loved his performance... far more than I've liked his last dozen movies.

Frankly, I never thought I'd see the 'old' Woody again, so this was a treat for me.

I would have to say this is as much a "Woody" film as it can be, considering he didn't write it. But don't tell me he didn't use his own lines somewhere along the way He is in 85% of the scenes.
