Why did Avigal... ??? - (SPOILER)

...choose Devi and looked so happy about it? I thought she was head over heels for Fioravante and barely knew Devi - they may have 'grown up' together, but they barely spoke to each other! IMO Devi was just infatuated with her because she was so pretty and enigmatic.

Do you think she really loved Devi? I think not. I tell myself that she was happy because she wouldn't be lonely any more. But why didn't she choose Fioravante?

I found that whole car interaction very odd.

I've asked myself the same question - when Avigal said 'I didn't say I don't love you' .. was kinda' out of the blue and without any previous context (love context).
On the same note (or on a different one ...) - Vanessa Paradis - is very ... unattractive - sorry to say it - but she is plain ugly. I use to listen to her music in the 90's - and as far as I can remember she was a pretty beautiful women.

She said goodbye to Fioravante because he was not Jewish. She's an Orthodox Jew - marrying a non-Jew would be a major transgression in her community. And while Fior's attention helped her to come out of her grief, there was no indication that she was thinking of leaving the community or Orthodox Judaism. So their relationship would have been impossible.

reply

Agreed. There's improbable and then there's impossible.

I do think it was unrealistic of her to go with Dovi, who's an obvious schmendrick.

But it's very realistic of her to realise that Fioravante is simply too far.

It has pretty much all been said, cause not only wasn't Fioravante jewish (which I think was the main reason), but also the fact that she found out what him and Murray were doing also helped her decision.

Her choosing Dovi was unbelievably far fetched; while I do realize he would have been a safer choice for her, because he actually seemed to love and care for her, It's clear she did not love him back. And this makes her whole "adventure" with Fior pointless. Although I buy the fact that Avigal and Fioravante may not end up together (it happening would actually be one of the many happy ending movie clichés) having her pair up with a guy that throughout the movie gave spectators the idea of being a complete douche is not much better. Not only this but the fact that she didn't even seem to want to give Dovi a chance at all... and yet there you go. It should have ended with her beggining to feel better with herself until eventually finding a new love within her religious grounds.

Yea, here not getting with Fior made sense, she was super strict and serious about her religion, but her suddenly getting with Dovi was way out of nowhere. Seemed really forced.

This is the weakest link of the movie. Vanessa Paradis. She is not only unattractive, but her decision of getting on with Liev Schriber is so out of place and annoying. So, John Turturro falls in love with whom when he couldn't perform during the menage-a-trois?

reply

It makes total sense for her to go with Dovi. He's a man who shares her culture and religion and besides all that he loves her. She knows he will take care of her. She has known him for a long time and so for her there no surprises with his personality. There is a genuine attraction between the two.
