Did anyone else HATE the 2nd world?

I hated the second half of Series 1 because the fairy world storyline was just too slow and trying. Did anyone else feel this way?

I think the threat of actual death gave the original world unquestionable edge. There was just always much more at stake.

That is such a great point. I really was not a fan of the plotlines though. I think that the petty player vs. player gripes did not fit very well coming from such a serious narrative from before. The costumes and world design were tremendously lacking. And that pseudo incest storyline was just weird.

I agree, because I'm just sitting there going.

"Dude this *beep* aint that serious. Like the worse that happens is they respawn or find a new game".

If anything it all demonstrated that the world needs to shut this system down since people clearly have lost their concept of reality.

And then there's the whole incest stuff.

Don't you know that its every Jap gamers dream to suddenly find out he is adopted and hence the hot sister becomes fair game. Totally congruent to Japanese culture.

Just saying.

They were still first cousins, though.

Just watched season 2 again this week and it's not too bad, but all of the problems still persist. I suppose I like the fact that the story took a chance on a whole new world (and will take another chance on another world).

I think it's a little strange that in all the time Suguha and Kazuto spent w/ each other in the game as Leafah and Kitiro, she still had no idea who he was! Kirito and Kazuto look exactly alike!

This is what got me glued to the show quickly. I was more amazed that they finished up this arc pretty quickly with only 15 episodes and then jump to the next game. I'll check out the next season if and when it's available but I don't think it will be the same.

The first part had death hanging above the characters like the sword of Damocles constantly. A fight for pure survival, which made for great drama, and tension.
The second part was a boring "save the damsel in distress princess from the evil wizard" story, and to top it all off, they made Kirito completely overpowered, so there was no actual challenge involved in reaching his goal.

I'm in the middle of watching the second half now, and it certainly isn't as strong as the first half. It isn't just the lesser stakes either; the supporting cast in general seems just much less interesting, and there's much less mystery about the whole plot. The first half had the ongoing mystery about why someone would even make an MMORPG that kills its own players in real life, whereas the villain of the second half pretty explains himself upfront as being a nasty pervert.

I actually think the beginning episodes about Kirito readjusting to the real world were relatively strong; him trying sheathe his wooden sword after the kendo duel with his sister says much more than anything else has in the second half of the series, at least so far.

Yet I can't stop myself from watching this for some reason.

I feel like the first half could have been a 100 episode anime all on its own. Much worse story lines have been stretched twice as long. As far as the second half, I spent nearly the entire time missing the characters from the first half who I like much more. Also, the villain the second half was one of the most despicable, disgusting villains I have ever seen. A complete soulless bastard. Also his motivations were so poor that it made his soullessness even worse. If you are going to write such a crap sack guy, at least making him compelling.

reply

Great observations, both of you. The villain in the second half was amazingly despicable and yet totally uninteresting. Not having the consequence of death in the second world really mired the plot, especially since we never felt Kirito was in any danger while going after the girl he loved. I really hope the producers and writers get it right in the next world and give us a compelling reason to tune in each week.

I totally agree. I think that's the show's biggest drawback; it just didn't do enough with the enormous amount of potential it had in its utterly brilliant and compelling storyline and wonderful cast of characters. I was hooked on this show from minute 1 and would have loved if it had been ten times longer than it was.

This is why i'm so glad I just found out that this show is based on a whole series of light novels. I want to check out the books and explore the SAO world more.

I liked it, honestly. The stakes were still high, just in a different way. Plus I had gotten used to Kirito and Asuna's adorableness together and I really wanted to see them reunited.

We could have seen a lot more of SOA. It stop at floor 75 I believe. That's 25 floor to go. At every ep I was like 'Wow already there?'. The world of SOA was great and the suporting charachters and politics interesting. It's like it's not the same writers in the second half. It's dumb and childish and straightforward, plus boobs.

Not at all. I liked it. But I suppose it's because I had already built up that emotional investment in Kirito and Asuna, and wanted to see them win. I probably wouldn't have liked it as much otherwise. As others on this thread have said, in the second world the stakes were lower (though still pretty high for Asuna), the supporting characters much less interesting, the villain a disgusting slug of a man, and the whole incest thing was... unusual, to say the least. But I still love the show because I still love Kirito and Asuna and it still hadn't finished resolving their storyline from the first part of the show.

reply

Pretty much yeah. I'd give the first half a solid 8.5/10....the second was a weak 5/10 at most.

And why wasn't Asuna there at the end?

reply

I feel that the ALO arc was a bit too slow for my liking. The risks were high, for Kirito at least, but I feel like GGO was more intense and serious.

I'm still disappointed that for that storyline, it dissolved a bit too quick. Don't get me wrong, I like Alfheim a lot, I do. But aside from what was going on with Asuna, it felt like there was nothing really going on, and it just seemed to forget about Death Gun.

Same here. Enjoyed the first half of the the first season, but the rest of this anime is just a pain to watch.
