If Series 3 follows the Thomas Hardy narrative...

will Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller get together?

I didn't believe this popular theory until recently when I read Chris Chibnall is a big Thomas Hardy fan and heavily influenced by his works.

Most of Thomas Hardy's protagonists have had unhappy romances/marriages and the rare happy union is where both parties have been previously married/in a relationship and started off being polar opposites and became friends while still married and then got together.

Personally I would prefer this not happen as it is too cliched. However, the argument still stands.

A big factor in that is whether Chris Chibnall plans to end series 3 with Hardy alive or dead.
If he keeps Hardy alive, I suspect they won't get together. They'll likely be friends or business partners of some sort and it will be sort of a happy ending.
If Chibnall chooses to end Broadchurch with Hardy's death, then as part of the tragic fall-out, yes Hardy and Ellie will have become a couple at some point before the end. Either that or Ellie will realize too late that she was in love with Hardy.
