S2 EP4 QUERY... HELP/CONFUSED...SPOILER ALERT (?)

No offense to David Tennant who I love, I'm a Dr. Who fan too and love him, but on this show his (natural) Scottish accent is so strong that I keep having to back up & re-listen when it seems he may be talking about something important to storyline... which is what brings me here now.
I'm watching on Netflix and on my Sony Media Player box there is no option for subtitles or I'd be using them for sure. I'm on Season 2, Episode 4, and during the scene about 19mins into episode, that begins when he and fellow detective Ellie are in the car and she says 'look at us Thelma and Louise you could be Susan Sarandon' and she asks him what he reckons happened.. when he is telling her something about past and says he "found her in the lake" ... I thought he was talking about one of the girls that went missing from 1st case that husband of woman he was hiding killed... but then he starts talking about his daughter... and I remember at beginning of episode he wakes from a nightmare with drowning theme... so did I forget from 1st season that his daughter dies from a drowning and this other case is hitting close to home and drudging up memories... or what??? Pretty much all he says after Ellie asks what he thinks happened I can't understand through his heavy accent.
Paused watching to come ask here, going to continue and maybe something else that happens will explain further (without Hardy speaking :) and help me figure it out... thanx to anyone who gets it better than I and can shed some light!

No, he's not talking about his own daughter (who is well and alive btw). He is talking about the girls from the first case, the Sandbrook case.

The older of the girls missing is assumed to still be missing as her whereabouts are not known and there is no body. But the younger girl, Pippa, was found in the river by DI Hardy and he said that she was the same age as his own daughter. That's why I think it hit him more.

Someone went into the Gillespie house, abducted both girls. Got rid of the bodies.

Why Lee Ashworth?

Ricky and Cate Gillespie said Pippa always used to like going next door to see Lee.

If Ashworth was in their house, there must've been forensics.

Yeah, there were. Ashworth's DNA was all over the place. A strand of his hair was found on Pippa's pillow.

What was his argument?

That he'd been in the house plenty of times, which is true, but... he still wouldn't say how the hair got on the pillow. At one stage, he said it had been put there to frame him.

By who? This... Ricky, Pippa's Dad?

That's what Ashworth claimed. But this case, Miller, whenever you think you're getting close, it slips away from you.

Is that why it got to you - cos you could never be sure?

I found her - Pippa Gillespie. She was in the river. (SOMBRE MUSIC) And it were deeper than I thought. I got pulled under. (GROANS AND GURGLES) Just managed to get free and carry her body onto the bank. She'd been in there maybe three days. Water rots the body. She was the same age as my daughter. (SIGHS) I can still feel the weight of her, water dripping off her clothes all down me. What sort of a person leaves a child like that?

Thank you SO much, WAY helps... from reading it I see I missed more than I realized... is the link you left updated so can always read the dialog? Would be nice to be able to check/read what I might have missed after watching an episode :) Thanx again!

I can understand the Scottish burr, but when there are no subtitles, I have to use earphones because I'm hard of hearing. It's a big help.

I really don't understand the issue. I can understand him fine - but I spent 30 years hanging out with the Navy so was used to lots of different accents from the US and beyond - especially Philippino, Jamaican and Puerto Rican. Also, I love several books with Scottish characters and listen to the audio versions.

Actually, the issue isn't surprising.

To accentuate Hardy's illness and differentiate the character from himself, David Tennant dropped the pitch of his voice and slurred words a bit. He was asked to do a reading as Hardy on radio last year and he took a few moments to change his voice to go into character -- stating he needed to sound poorly with phlegm in his system to be Hardy.

So if Hardy's health has improved in the story for series 3, perhaps David will be easier to understand.

I am very slightly HOH so Scottish accents are completely blurry to me! If it weren't for the captions, I never would have watched the series.
Can you open Netflix on your computer and turn on the CC there? I watch NF on two TVs, a Kindle, an iPhone and a laptop, and it seems like when I start a show on one device, the preferences remain in place if I switch to another device,
