The ending in Gracepoint is different than in Broadchurch.

And Broadchurch is better....

I didn't bother watching Gracepoint because I'd seen Broadchurch. But I did watch the last episode to see what would happen and was definitely not impressed with Gracepoint.

I always recommend watching Broadchurch 1 at some point.

All but one actor is different so you might find yourself a little confused with who's who. Plus some have partial or complete name changes.

For a quick guide to the similar characters in each show, start with this article:

Broadchurch is so much better on every level. I never even finished Gracepoint. Watch Broadchurch.

Broadchurch is excellent; Gracepoint is a very poor imitation. Don't waste your time with it. I gave up on Gracepoint after 1 episode.

reply

That doesn't even make sense. At episode 1, they are the exact same show. Nearly shot for shot. The team felt the first episode of Broadchurch was perfect, so they deviated later. Don't be such a damn hipster. Gracepoint ends up being a bit slower, especially with the brief branch off plotline, and the "changed," ending is *beep* The change was minuscule at best. If you're going to change a story, change the damp story, don't just slightly deviate. The shows are almost identical. Everyone keeps praising Broadchurch like it's some kind of magically superior different show, when in reality there is very little different between them. Don't get me wrong, I like Broadchurch just fine, and I liked Gracepoint too. Ultimately, they are the same damn show, in more than just namesake.

The script and the story are pretty much the same. But it's the casting and acting that made the big difference.

It was so odd to have Tennant playing the same character with a different name and an american accent. Why not just get another actor? The rest of the cast just couldn't hold a candle to their counterparts in Broadchurch... most notably the actors playing the Solanos and the actress playing Det Miller.

Fraaaank. FRANK! Get my jean bin. Susie wants my jeans.
No she doesnt.

Tennant wanted to recreate Hardy in the US version. I've heard he auditioned, and clearly beat out his competition.

Don't forget the really bad wig!  It was so bizarre, it was almost a character in its own right.

It was a pity that Gracepoint didn't come together, somehow. For me, it never felt as visceral or raw as the story asked for. It was all somehow a bit too carefully groomed. And (as much as I love Jackie Weaver) the support roles didn't measure up to the extraordinary performances in Broadchurch by the likes of Pauline Quirke and David Bradley.

Personally, I'd recommend that anyone who enjoyed Gracepoint watch the original. Just be aware that the ending differs.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

reply

That wasn't a wig.

David Tennant had just finished a long run playing Richard II onstage, complete with hair extensions braided in to his own long hair. A few days after finishing Richard II, he was in Victoria beginning work on Gracepoint. Someone in hair and makeup must have decided that the mess Tennant's hair was left in after the extensions were removed was a good look for Carver's overall state of being disheveled.

By the end of the series, his hair had been trimmed back and neatened up a lot. A few days after finishing Gracepoint, he was back in the UK with the Broadchurch team, hair clipped shorter again, to reprise Alec Hardy. The guy's a workaholic.

I've just finished binge watching both seasons of Broadchurch and certainly agree with most here that BC is far superior to GP.

Especially how S2 wrapped so much up and really has, at the end, a reaffirmation of "family values" as THE best path to the most happiness for all.

All the problems stemmed from warped sexuality and drives and then unrestrained emotions of frustration/anger - then fear of being caught. Being attracted to other people isn't a sin, but "covetousness" is and a deadly sin, at that (basically ACTING on attraction to immoral or even amoral objects of attraction.)

I can certainly understand why they apparently aren't doing a S2 of GP after they both changed S1 plus British and American cultures are so different - even in small town provincialism. Rather than any meaningful "banishment" - in the USA one of the 3 most aggrieved probably WOULD have just shot the murderer after his acquittal.

When we first had access to BBC television when my husband was stationed in Japan, we were able to watch Spooks (in the US, it was MI-5), and I noticed that difference in US/Brit tv. In the US everything is so smooth/clean...even the poor are clean and wear fashionable clothing. Look at the videos for Do They Know It's Christmas and We Are the World. Geldof wrote Christmas and called UK artists who were touring all over Europe to ask them to participate - they all showed up and it was recorded in short order, and they all look like crap and that they'd been up all night... which they had. Now look at World: much as I love MJ & Lionel Richie, for all their ability, the lyrics weren't stellar and at the recording studio the artists look as if they are portraying people who have been up all night... except that their hair and make up is perfect.

reply

Except for your suggestion to not use Tennant, I concur. Since at the time we had no access to Broadchurch I was VERY grateful to have him in GP...

reply

You should watch season 1 of Broudchurch. It's way better than Gracepoint.

reply

It's basically the same plot, although Gracepoint adds a plotline with the hiker and with Ellies son going missing briefly. They also change the nature of Dany's death around a bit.

But I found Broadchurch to be a much better show IMO. So if you're up for sitting through the same plot again, give it a try.

I saw gracepoint first and loved it. I decided to watch broadchurch anyways because I wanted to see the second season and knew the USA version was not happening. Broadchurch was better by far and I don't regret watching it. The acting is amazing and they have different endings. Season 2 was as amazing as the first and I didn't expect it.

reply

Oh and you could easily pick up at season 2. But I would reccomend watching at least the last broadchurch episode.

reply

If you have watched Broadchurch, Gracepoint isn't worth watching.
