You are a really horrible person

I was so happy when Ben told Abby, "you're a really horrible person." It's so true. She just comes across as generally unpleasant (a lot like Olly). I especially like that it was said just as she was beginning to preen. I even have a bit of sympathy for the defence lawyer (Sharon?) because at least with her we know she has home-life issues and a reason for being so vitriolic. (Not that I like her either, but you get my point.)

Agreed, it was brilliant to see her face fall when he said that, she knows Ben is a really decent good guy so hearing that from him stung. What really bothers me about both Sharon and Abby is that they both KNOW that Joe is guilty of murdering a young boy and not only are they desperately trying to get him off but they both seem to be enjoying it and enjoying putting the Latimers through even more hell than they've already been through.

I agree. Their job is to help Joe to be considered "not guilty" but they didn't have to enjoy it, specially not when are making things so much worse for the Latimers.

I think the writer is trying to show Abby's naievety, she just sees it as a game and is not really thinking about how people are actually affected by what's happening. Sharon is extra motivated because her opponent her ex mentor who she fell out with, she also seems to be channeling her anger from her sons situation into this fight as there is nothing she can do to help him.

reply

It's the defense job to defend even a guilty person but what really gets to me is the passion both had at playing the game and destroying the Latimers even more, even going as far as blaming the father for the murder of his son. Both are sick.

reply

Yes! To my mind, it had more impact coming from Ben, the put-upon family man, than coming from Ollie who Abby literally screwed for juicy info. Put me on Team Ben!

reply

Throughout her involvement, Abby has been talking about the case like it's a gold star on her CV. Her asking Ben at the end what case he had coming next was just another way for her to show off. I agree that Sharon has deeper motives for taking on this case and you can tell that it does effect her but Abby just sees it as a game that she must win at all costs.

I loved it too. My whole family applauded.

Reminded me of a moment in the movie Nuts where Richard Dreyfus finally puts Barbara Streisand in her place. The entire theater stood and applauded.

I agree. Even though I have enjoyed the show's portrayal of the complexity of people and that they usually never have truly evil intentions, I do believe that it was time to show someone like Abby, someone who is so distorted from reality and the fact that other people will be impacted by her actions, that she simply sees everything as a game, a chance to win gold stars.
While Sharon's attitude is understandable, and she comes across as a rather warm and caring person who hides behind her wits and brusqueness, Abby just seems like a generally despicable person.

Abby is a careerist. She sees the case almost as a game that her team needs to win and score points. She's already thinking about her next position. The feelings of victims family, or the actual guilt of the defendant are not important to her. She may not be a truly bad person, but she's typical of many young career-minded people today.

reply

It depends. She was called to the carpet. If she continues to act this way, she IS a bad person. If she looks at the effects of her actions and changes, then she has a chance at redemption. An explanation of her behavior does not constitute an excuse for it.

Funny thing about young people these days. If you ask them about the person they are in a relationship with, they will first tell you what the person does, as if the "what" is more important than the "who." Only later will they realize that the what really doesn't matter with regard to happiness and long term relationships are all about the who. Unless, of course, they are really shallow and deeply flawed individuals.

Abby is a business psychopath.

Great moment! I backed up and watched it a second time!

Olly and her deserve eachother. I really used to like Olly. In the first season he seemed like he was just a curious boy trying to make a name for himself, this season he treats everyone like garbage. The only thing important to him now is his career and the next big story for him to write. His attitude just stinks.

My heart truly sank when told Abby this. But the look on her face, a bit of remorse. She knows deep down that it's true. I had to rewatch it, it stung so deep.

I feel like this is the best scene of Season 2 😀

I know I'm a little late to this discussion but I totally agree. I wanted to give him a big high five for that.
