What is it with the big gold chains?

Is this some sort of Boston Irish thing? All the Donovan men seem to wear huge big chains with everything. I'm from the UK, and here the only people who wear chains like that are black rappers, mediterranean/latin types or working class/blue collar men. Those last two also tend to just wear them fairly discretely under a shirt, not all over the place like the Donovans.
