I remember it being said that nobody gets a wage for working. So how do the families get spending money for house hold goods, entertainment, clothing, and so on? Surely they don't ask every time they want to buy a new pair of socks or stock the fridge.

I know little more about them than what I've learned watching the show and reading some web articles but generally in socialist communities members receive compensation based on how much work they contribute to the group, the more work they do, the more shares they receive. Hutterites seem to work that way because when Claudia needed money for the ipad she asked for more work around the colony but the Money Boss refused her request.
