Opinion Divided

It seems opinion is very divided over this movie. I must admit my main disappointment comes from the fact that being a peccadillo release, I was expecting a much stronger gay element to the film than was actually in it. Having watched the trailer, I have spent months waiting for the DVD release date (which seemed to change on a weekly basis) so I was as surprised as anyone when it arrived today, as I was expecting an October 6th release according to my last message from Amazon. So having finally got to watch this film after so much anticipation I was hugely disappointed. I get that there was supposed to be a haunting element to the movie but I just found it long, slow and boring. The acting was good and the scenery was too but, apart from Clement, the characters were completely unsympathetic and I found it really hard to connect with or feel anything for their situation. Alex Lawther did a good job in making Elliot likeable overall but there were times when he too became annoying. I must admit it was marginally better before the dad arrived. After that I just wanted it to end, quickly. I think this is another of those movies where all the best bits are in the trailer. Real waste of time, I really wouldn't bother.

You don't think there was a strong enough "gay element" lol?! The entire core of the movie was about the issues of the son being gay AND the father being gay. The scene with Clement on the boat, not gay enough for you? Lol!

Or do you only mean there wasn't enough gay sex? This movie isn't about scenes that show stuff for the sake of showing it. It's an atmospheric psychological piece about the emotional dynamics between the characters. That's not "boring" unless you're just in it for more action, in which case just look for porn movies - I don't know why people need a lot of sex in their movies when there's actual porn for that purpose.

This is an excellent movie, sensitively handled and all the performances were remarkably subtle.
