Why voices?

This is a really decent Dinosaur movie akin to Land Before Time. However, while I was watching the English version, called Speckles The Tarbosaurus, I found myself wondering why they bothered to have voices at all. The story is fairly obvious just from what the Dinosaurs do in the movie. It would have actually been better in my opinion since some of the VO's aren't the best. I hope the DVD/Blu Ray has the option of removing the VO's.

You know, you're right. I can't take a male Tarbosaurus seriously when his name is Speckles. Not badass enough. The voices just dumb it down and make it laughable.

A way to mix "Walking with Dinosaurs"/"When Dinosaurs Roamed America"-type documentaries with children's films like "Land Before Time" and "Dinosaur". I thought it was well done. Kids of a certain age may not fully understand without a narrator/actor to guide them in the story.

It is because of the feels... you get more attached to a character when you can understand their internal thoughts.

Old Tom and Jerry ruled. Talking Tom and Jerry suck.

Where adults can get the obvious visuals, children might not. Even in the silent era there were cards showing dialog and explaining the scene setup, and those films were meant for full grown adults.

*EDIT*
Having said that, a version without the narrative and just the sound effects would be interesting.

In the German version there's only Speckles as narrator of the/his story. Is that different in English?

reply

My brother and I just watched it last weekend. Only Speckles had a voice.

I'm not sure if We would have enjoyed it more if no one spoke, if there was an independent narrator, or if everyone spoke. As it was, only Speckles was a bit jarring.

Because young kids who like dinosaurs wouldn't understand it otherwise. And, it was probably part of the Korean film.
