Why does this show have such a terrible rating?

I've found it really good.

There's no laugh track, a strong cast, pretty damn good writing, plus A MONKEY IN CLOTHES.

A MONKEY.

WEARING PEOPLE CLOTHES.

I love dat *beep*

Ratings up 7 %.
how we face death is at least as important as how we face life.

That's good. I would think it could be considered a family show, maybe that would help ratings? There aren't too many of those on network tv anymore. I don't like kids or have them, but I remember being one...
I would have loved this show when I was a kiddiepoo! I mean it's a show you could watch with your kids, not for kids.

According to that website it is actually DOWN 7.5%

Unless -7% and going from a 1.4 to a 1.3 is actually GOOD...I am not 100% sure how ratings work.

reply

The early ratings were up by .1, then after adjustments later in the day it dropped down .2, making it down by .1

'Really good' is overstating it. For every funny line, there's about a half-dozen that at best, fall flat, at worst, are really groan-inducing lame.

I think it would work much better as a series of short sight-gags, and leave out 75% of the dialog and everything else in between.

reply

Exactly! All of those things make me excited for the next episode. I almost fell on the floor laughing at the last few minutes (and most of the episode) with the puppet. And I am constantly cracking up at Betsy Sodero's facial expressions and delivery. They better not take this show off the air...I've been wanting to see Tyler Labine in a show since Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

I find it pretty funny also.

Because it's just Scrubs but with animals for patients. Made most obvious by tonight's episode and the "slow down" which was taken directly from an episode of Scrubs.

"Ed, you have to go be gay for that poor dead intern."

reply

Was that from Scrubs? I didn't realize, lol. I don't watch this and think about Scrubs. I thought last night was a good episode, it's finding it's legs, so to speak.

It's a moot point now, and admittedly I watched only the first episode, but this type of show used to be called a farcical comedy, which mainstream audiences basically outgrew in the 1980's, if not before.

While many might find the show very funny, the targeted audience is not large enough to support the bottom line, which is what led to niche channels in the cable market. It's yet another example of the decision making fat cat TV execs losing touch with the reality of the average viewer's life.

The real mystery of this show is how the NBC execs managed to convince the advertisers this would be one of their flagship comedy shows; there must have been some serious decision inhibiting activities occurring at that meeting.

yes the show was a little rough and need some work. they did try for a little to much actual plot and not enough comedy but i think they were starting to figure it out ad were making the transition to more comedy and less filler.

Dr. Coleman's dislike of people started out fairly clear and then they drifted away form that to he only disliked those that were a threat to his position in the hospital. But despite that he still was a funny guy and if given a proper chance could have been one of the most hilarious characters on TV.

Rizzo was great, simply put. They needed to give him more screen time.

Dorthy was an alright character but was just to flat and plain, there was no depth to her, she didn't feel as if she had an actual role to play in the show. She should have been used as a contrast to Dr. Coleman.

The rest of the staff were just a little too on the nose as somebody already said. They were to the point that they were more annoying than anything else. They picked a character trait, blew it up 100X and played it for all it was worth in an attempt to make it funny; but they only to end up overplaying it. By doing so they destroyed their personalities and lost 90% of the humor in it. they should have just let them be a little quirky and weird and let the comedy come from that, not the over-exaggerated personalities they tried to create; those were not funny.

now that i take some time to really look at and critique the show i can see why it did so poor, but I DO NOT! agree with the decision to cancel it. they should have worked on it and fixed it so it could become all they had promised it would be.

if something is broke you tr to fix it before throwing it away.

Even with its flaws, AP still was funnier than Up All Night and Whitney. I watch UAN but never laugh at it. I should stop watching it. If the would have put AP on Thursday night, it would have found an audience.

reply

because it's on NBC
