Did anyone feel like Randi pulled some 'magic' in the courtroom?

The way this segment of the film is structured is very interesting. We drive up to the courthouse with Randi in the car, talking about how the judge is (paraphrasing) a hardass who likes to deport people. He gets out of the car, and says that he has to pull some kind of rabbit out of a hat to keep Deyvi/Jose with him.

No cameras are allowed in the courtroom, jump to three hours later. Deyvi is essentially a free man, he is allowed to remain in the country, everything ends up happy and the film closes on a very positive note.

All along, though, we've had people repeatedly stressing that they will believe what they believe and they will do what they have to to maintain that belief. Randi himself says again at the close never to trust a magician because they are conmen and charlatans.

I think it would be *beep* awesome if he went into that courtroom and using his years of knowledge about what is real and what is false, being an insanely accomplished magician, subtly and carefully manipulated that judge using his powers as a mentalist. Perhaps not what the filmmaker intended but that's what I took away from it.

Great film.

I thought the fact that they guy had over 20 character references that testified on his behalf might have had something to do with it.

It just shows how much of a hypocrite Randi is. He covers for his boyfriends criminal activity, yet wants us to take his credibility for calling out other frauds just like him. He should be locked up with his criminal boyfriend for trying to cover up a crime.
