What was the deal w/ the two bullets on the kitchen floor?

In the kitchen Tully is sitting on the floor and on the phone and he has two bullets sitting upright on the ground next to him. What was that about? I thought maybe they were to kill himself and that chic, but with bullets still being in the gun even when he out it in his mouth that'd make no sense.
