Why wasn't this show as successful as Revenge?

I think it was the advertising. I didn't know much about this show. But you could find Revenge everywhere when it premiered.

A good idea poorly executed. And it was on nbc

I remember seeing some advertising for this show but not nearly as much as I saw for the series premieres of shows like Revenge or even now with Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and most of the handful of ads I saw for Deception were in print.

The first problem is that NBC doesn't appear to have the same investment in promoting its shows as other networks like ABC does. I've seen ABC and Fox heavily promote shows they KNEW were losers (Lucky 7 anyone?). Second, while I think Meagan good is very pretty and somewhat talented, she's really not the strongest actress and she lacked the charisma needed for the role.

All that aside, I watched the series in full and thoroughly enjoyed it and was sorry to hear it was cancelled. It had hints of Revenge without coming off as a wannabe or a carbon copy.

You make a good point about her not being the strongest actress. Neither is Emily Vancamp but she has a great supporting cast that at times steals the show. Deception was missing a great supporting cast.

Yeah, now that I think of it, Emily VanCamp is the world's strongest actress either but part of that is that her character is supposed to come off more as a smouldering rage. She had much more presence on Brothers & Sisters.

Deception had a decent supporting cast IMO, Victor Garber and Katherine LaNasa are nothing to turn your nose at and I found their dynamic interesting. The one thing that bothered me is that Joanna's connection to Bowers family -- especially Vivian -- seemed tentative at best. Too much time had passed for me to really believe she was so hellbent on finding out who murdered a friend whom she hadn't seen or spoken to in 15 years.
