Why would anyone want to make such depressing films?

Love Drew Barrymore, Toni Collette and Paddy Considine but I can't see why would anyone want to make such a depressing film. There was no redemption, no uplift, just emptiness - would have been a 'nicer' film if her death had some bearing/positivity on people going forward - without that its just a gloomfest with a few jokes sprinkled throughout to lighten the tone. The characters were even pretty unlikable.

As for the IVF subplot - I've been through that and lost someone to cancer, and they are the 2 toughest things in my life so far, the first lasting a lot longer than the second. Not exactly a charming storyline to escape the negative for a while, and as for baby cancels out death - how many times have we seen that before?

Why not ? Sickness and death are part of life and life is no fairytale.I think Miss You Already and beautiful film with great and realistic performances.Sad yet uplifting.
And I'm glad that they didn't turn Milly into a "saint" after fiding out that she has cancer.Would have been a total copout and so cliché...She gradually "transformed" into a more selfless and compassionate person which is by far more realistic.

Good point about not making Milly into someone different. Just because she was dying doesn't mean her inherent personality would change. She retained her unique quirkiness and that is much more real.

Urghh. I really wanted to see this but after just getting through a year of cancer treatment and feeling really lucky it wasnt as difficult as I expected it to be I think this movie will just make me feel like crap, or even worse, depressed. Thanks for the headsup.

Same here, I just watched this last night. The visuals are very realistic. It was liking watching myself go through all that again. But contrary to what people on here have said about the film, I really enjoyed it. I thought the characters were realistic. I think unless you've gone through this or was very close to someone who's gone through it, it may be difficult to connect with the characters. Women who get breast cancer can be over the top and at times not very likable. Emily's actions and feelings were very true, at least for me.

It is a heartbreaking movie but also will put a smile on your face.

Full disclosure...I did switch over to My Big Fat Greek Wedding after it was over! :-)

Agree, dreary drab crap.

Why would anybody come a message board and make such a stupid comment.

I disagree. I thought it was like life, sadness and frustration in dealing with challenges...... but the friendship endured through it all and the love between the best friends was passed down to her children after she died. Just because a film deals with sickness and death doesn't necessarily mean it's depressing. There were a mix of many emotions in this movie and I find those more interesting as they parallel real life, making it more relatable. I think some people either are uncomfortable with certain types of emotion, others merely see film as an escape and don't want to feel bummed out at all. I did not feel down after this one, quite the opposite.

Because they can. Obviously you didn't see Leaving Las Vegas. I, for one, am glad to see a movie that doesn't have the happiest of endings like every other movie out there.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog
