so here's my theory about this show

eric andre is trapped in this torturous state of limbo where he is forced to host a *beep* late night talk show.
this is why he begins each episode by destroying the set.
he's fighting against it with all he has but once he gives up, the set rebuilds and he's forced to host the show once again.

i believe the second season finale was proof of this. it was like he was using every fiber of his being to fight against it but in the end he ran out of energy and the show one.

in regards to the other people on the show:
i feel like they're remnants of what eric can remember of the real world. The guests are random celebreties who he either remembers clearly or doesnt (which would explain guests like Reese Witherspoon, George Clooney, Beyonce & Jay-Z, etc)

the pranks would be a reflection of eric's feelings of rejection from society that he felt in his old life. There's a lot that alludes to his sense of unworthiness within himself but the best example of this would be The Hannibal Buress Show episode where he is pushed to the background and Hannibal proves far more successful a host than Eric. Throughout each episode Hannibal is portrayed as the memory of an old friend used by Eric's mind to project his lack of self worth

Of course this is all just conjecture but its fun to theorize about shows like this one where so many questions are raised and none of them answered.

Im like high as *beep* right now but everything you just said sounds awesome and I agree 100%.

I think that is an interesting and a creative take...but I think Eric Andre and his crew just want to do dumb stuff.

I love this show.

i wouldn't say they're just trying to do dumb stuff because there is a lot of thought that goes into their bits. It's all aimed at making guests uncomfortable and making them look crazy in the editing room by *beep* with them in the interview.

plus you can tell that all their man on the street pranks are really thought out as well. I can see how it would be easy to dismiss it as just doing dumb stuff but the more you watch the episodes the more you can tell that what they're doing is so much more than just being silly or dumb

Sjsufan-4 I know... but Eric Andre uses that phrase 'we just do dumb stuff" all the time. In the podcast, The Fogelnest Files, he says how they try to think of of well-thought out stuff and then, someone says, "Doc Chicken!" and then it's done.

The show is hilarious. I'm sure a lot more goes into it and i am not dismissing it as just them doing dumb stuff. I was just responding to the "Eric in hell" comment... which is a very creative way at looking at it.

Yeah, man. That's deep. *passing the blunt*

I agree that they are trapped in some alt reality where they are forced to do this talk show forever. I'm not so sure I agree with your ideas on the "pranks" portion of the show being about his rejection from society though.

But they definitely go out of their way throughout seasons 1 & 2 to show Eric and Hannibal being somehow forced into the show by some unseen force.

I think Season 3 was a massive turning point in the show because Eric and Hannibal seemed to have accepted their fate as eternal talk show hosts in this odd limbo reality. They seem okay with it. They don't seem to be fighting it or scared or uncomfortable anymore.

The intro could be seen as a literal metaphor for the "deconstruction of the late night genre" or it's Eric repeatedly trying to escape, and destroy his environment only for it to come back.

You know man i actually really agree with you on this, so much seems to point to this idea. like why he destroys the set only to have it reappear. why he is so depressed on the show sometimes. the list goes on...

Your theory seems legit... and also it reminds me of one ComedyBangBang episode where Scott Awkwardman was actually in an insane asylum and Reggie was his psychiatrist and the show was all in his head.

But Andre takes it to an awesome extreme, so going from asylum to actual hell, yeah I can see it.

I think the IMDB synopsis on IMDB does a good job of describing the atmosphere of the show. It gets really bizarre on occasions, even for this show. The end of the first episode is... very odd.

Its my fave comedy show, its surreal, weird and flat out offending. I know not evrybody gets it but for me it is already a milestone and sort of renaissance of stand up comedy that hasent been seen in a long time....

I just wanted to say I agree that the plot of the show is some of purgatory where Eric Andre just has to exist in. I just love how each intro has so many different variations of causing mayhem to Eric and the set itself. It is almost like a warner brothers cartoon on crack.
