I actually would support those suggestions...although the changes would probably have had to be made before the show went into production, or at least after the pilot ep(s.)
I understand that the concept is based on the huge-headed Blythe dolls, combined with the second coming of Littlest Pet Shop toys (giant heads and eyes with tiny, nondescript bodies; I much preferred the more realistic original LPS toys.) Still, I would prefer more realistic character designs--at least for the non-humans. It's just harder for me to accept/buy/care about/love characters when they're too cartoony-looking. I do like the LPS characters quite a lot, especially Zoe. But I still often picture them in my head the way I wish they looked onscreen.
The Biskit twins are deliberately irritating; their father is more likable, really. He thinks he's Mr. Business, but for all of his posturing, he's actually quite pathetic and doesn't know what he's doing. 'Tis sad. Aww. I like the splashes of neon fuchsia in his standard outfit. (Speaking of standard outfits, Blythe refuses to be one of those TV characters whose closet is filled with twenty duplicates of the same exact thing--they've been giving her different clothes and hairdos just about every episode recently.) Anyway, I wonder what made Fisher choose the pet supply industry in the first place.
It does feel a little "uurrrrrgh" to me that Blythe had to be Ms. Fashionista Designer-Girl. Feels overdone. Like, you can't just have more 'average,' relatable young people as characters anymore; they all have to be super-outstanding at some particular thing (typically the only thing that defines them as characters/people), to the point where they become famous stars or are suddenly being given all these opportunities left and right from "important" people. This show's not too bad with that, but now that somebody mentions it, I did find it a bit cliche that the main girl's a fashion designer. Even if her primary clients are assorted animals...and really, WHAT IS UP with the group of regulars?! In reality they'd be 90%+ dogs and cats. Here they decide to randomly go with one dog, no cat, and a PANDA and MONGOOSE and SKUNK and MONKEY...?!? The gecko's the only other one commonly kept as a pet, or even recommendable for that. Furthermore, it kinda irks me how Blythe and the rest go around saying "pets" so much all the time. People simply say "animals" a lot more often, but the show uses "pets" constantly--in situations where the general word is much more appropriate because they're not referring only to domesticated species. Blythe can--for some reason these writers, unlike those of the Wild Thornberrys, clearly don't feel compelled to address--talk to all animals, including wild ones!!! It seems as if they just want to stick as many chibified, cute animals of all species as they can in there with no regard to believability at all.
Being an artist who draws/paints animals could possibly have been a little better for her. Or someone who enjoys filming and documenting and photographing them, and/or making movies about them. Whatever. All she really needs to do is love animals! I like her, and the whole setup is cute, but usually the pets' storylines are better/funnier than hers.
Imo the animation, characterizations, designs, stories, and music of LPS are all fair to good, whilst those of MLP range from very good to truly awesome. I can't imagine the former ever equaling or overtaking the latter--not the way it's going, anyhow. I believe that G4 is by far the best incarnation of My Little Pony (G1 and G2 were cute and good, but I didn't find them anything to obsess over.)
