Season 3 in general and ending - disappointing

IMHO - the third season was very disappointing, the facts:
- no major killing of main characters
This could've been shocking and a milestone for the whole series
- no big plot twist
As in season two where it was revealed that abigail is still living
- a lame finale (fight with francis) and
- a half-baked ending, only to make sure that there is room for a new season to be made

I really dig the series but do not think it was ending on a peak...

reply

- A good story doesn't need killing major characters to be good.
- Why would be a plot twist in a SERIES FINALE? Which, by the way, there is one with the last scene...

Sad that you think that way. Hannibal S3 finale was one of the most satisfactory finales I've ever seen.

Eh? Dolarhyde ring a bell? When main characters get killed off people whine. When they dont get killed off people whine.

Miraculous.

I love the bit about no main character deaths. How does he know Will isnt dead? Or Hannibal?

reply

Watch the bit after the credits and you shall see

reply

I've seen it, many times.

reply

That shows they arent dead, doesn't it? (been an age since I've seen it)

reply

If it gets picked up I think they did a really good job of wrapping it up while leaving it open. Some people thought she cut her own leg off and cooked it. I think Hannibal survived and came back, hacked it off and cooked it. Since rewatching it I think it's also possible he hacked it off and cooked it, prepared the table, then Dolarhyde turned up. Also, could be a flashback.

Lots of different opportunities there, me thinks. Nothing is concrete. Just up to the viewer interpretation. For me I think Will croaked on the way down and bastard hannibal used him to cushion the fall. I'm undecided as to whether conceding it was beautiful was when he died and slumped onto Hannibal, or if he intentionally committed murder suicide.

Lots of fun to be had.

I liked season three the best.

Hannibals interactions with the red dragon, flashbacks with Gideon, his time in Italy, etc.

Agreed

you must be joking.

reply

I agree with the op that the third season sucked! I might not agree on the reasons tho.

My biggest problem was the anti-climatic capture of Hannibal! It should've been more intense and surprising.
And basically the whole Red Dragon storyline (especially the ending) felt forced and pointless. I really hope that if the show returns someday it won't pick up from Silence of the Lambs!

But yeah, I loved the two first seasons, but this one almost ruined the whole show for me.

pointless

what...

reply

It was pointless because everyone (obviously) knew what to expect, and also the storyline seemed hurried.

reply

I agree with the hurried part because they were cancelled at the beginning of the season and had to close up the story quickly but the pointless part it's baffling me.

they were cancelled at the beginning of the season

Where did you hear that? I seem to recall Bryan had previously decided to condense the season into 2, and I'm pretty sure I read several times the cast and crew didnt find out until just before the announcement by nbc was made.

reply

The rumors of not getting another season were from the beginning of S3, and when I said the beginning is after they just finished the first 6 episodes, they always finish 6 eps, then go to a small break before resuming the the work.

So the times are not coincidental, they got the cancellation just in the middle of shooting the final 6 eps.

So it was a rumour started on social media and never confirmed by the showrunner, and it was started in the middle of the season, not at the beginning. OK then.

Neither here nor there for me anyway. The Dolarhyde arc didnt seem rushed to me. An entire season would have been good because Armpitage did such a good job with the character, but Hannibal incarcerated the entire time would have dragged on IMO.

reply

No, I didn't read it on social media, I just know how to count and use logic.

What rumor about Pitt ?

reply

That he was sacked from BE because he was impossible to work with, which the showrunner denied. Then it dragged over to him being recast on Hannibal.

reply

Is not a rumor, is a speculation based on logic, not on my ass.

I think I just got sucked back down the rabbit hole.

What I meant is that it wasn't a gossip made up by the fans on social media.

I found season the the weakest of the three. The story felt like it was losing momentum. Which is strange, as the later half of the season is when the Red Dragon adaptation starts. This has always been my favourite of Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lector novels. However, here it felt rushed and I did not feel drawn into the story.

While it was better than Brett Ratner's Red Dragon, it was not as unsettling or as intense as Michael Mann's Manhunter.

In your opinion, of course.

I do still have a few problems with S3. The fact that EVERYONE survived the s2 finale except for Abigail, leading to Alana still being ... there ( sorry, I just don't think she's that great of a character ) and ending up taking Chilton's rightful place when we all know he should be the one running that asylum and torturing Hannibal , the fact that Bedelia was also just kinda there , the lack of any real fleshing out of Dolarhyde's storyline apart from one little scene with zero dialogue that explained nothing ( I'm cool with mystery , but if you're gonna go for the mysterious angle, then just don't show anything at all ) , the fact that Chilton is replaced with Freddie Lounds because Fuller " couldn't stand to see that sort of violence happening to a woman " yet he could stand to see a woman have her *beep* eyes poked out with thumbs back in season 1 and all the other violent incidents that happened to women , when he clearly knew what he was getting into when he changed Freddie's gender in the first place ( even though the whole " Chilton getting horribly tortured each season " running gag is kinda great ) , the fact that some of it kinda reeks of pandering to the Tumblr Fannibals I'll never not hate, etc. etc.

However, as a whole, I still love the hell out of it . Just like I love the hell out of the entire series.

reply

No, not just my opinion. I have read a ream of posts stating this. Not specifically for the reasons that I have given, but the same general opinion.

It is your opinion. The fandom and critics are very much 50/50 on S3. A lot of people loved it and a lot of people hated it. There is not a clear side.

By your own admission it is the opinion of 50%, by definition that is not just my opinion.

Do you know what's the definition of a fact? Because nothing you said is one. You consider S3 not good compared with S1 and 2, I consider S3 equally or even better.

Opinions. No facts.

Season three is my least favorite of the show, but in my opinion, the worst season of Hannibal is still better than the best season of most other shows.

I did think the first four episodes were kinda slow, but in 3x05 the show thankfully regained momentum and never let up the rest of the season. The Red Dragon arc was fantastic from beginning to end.

I honestly can't see how anyone could view that finale (or fight) as anything less than spectacular. One of the best series finales I've ever seen.

Peter, is your social worker in that horse?

reply

Agreed, disappointing is absolutely the last word to describe it, probably the most satisfying and gratifying capping off of a TV show, the fact that it's so recent is also really heartening.
Fair to expect similar stuff from American Gods, what with Al Swearengen being involved and all.
