Why in the world did they create this sequel?

I haven't seen it and I'm not going to. But I read the plot and it completely ruins the first play/film, which I love. So (probably Ike a lot of POTO fans) I'm going to try to pretend this doesn't exist. The characters are all so different. Christine in the first one was a sweet, innocent, wonderful person. In this one she is a tramp. In the first one, Meg is a sweet innocent person, in this one she is a psycho. In the first one Raoul is the heroic good guy, in this one he is a loser. WTH? I wish I never found out this even existed. It basically makes POTO null and invalid.

Beats me why they did it. It contradicts the original so much, and ruins everyone's characters, especially poor Raoul who they made into a drunkard with no heart :(

i did watch it.... and I'm going to pretend it doesn't exist.

Good idea :)

Because it's very good. Phantom needed a sequel. It left a lot of viewers wondering what happened.

Sometimes not knowing is the right answer.

I take it I'm not the only one who thought LND was unnecessary and it just made things more complicated, let alone tossing away all the character development we had with POTO. I'll just pretend that LND doesn't exist or it takes place in an alternate universe, because I have a hard time believing what happened actually happened.

Eh, that's boring that way.

I love you, Kristen Stewart. :) You are so beautiful and talented. I would love to perform with you.

Love Never Dies is to put it frankly, a beautiful unnecessity. Yes it introduces new dramatic elements that are emotionally manipulative, but the story such as it is, tries to do something that it never should have done, in my opinion, and that is ruin the atmosphere that hovered in the metaphorical air after the end of PoTO. Erik's beautiful sacrifice, the rediscovery of his humanity, young love allowed to flourish, a deformed genius whose fate is unknown, all of these lead to a fantastically romanticised fable of acceptance, truth, beauty, genius, and obsession. The plot of LND, such as it is, is transparent and contrived but what I liked was that it drew attention to the underappreciated duo, faithful Madame Giry, and Christine's erstwhile friend from the corps de ballet, Meg. If anything LND is the sour note of reality intruding on the ghostly aura of otherworldly immortality emanating from the much superior original. As far as songs go, only Till I Hear You Sing, and the titular Love Never Dies are memorable but they are nothing when compared to such powerful, haunting songs as The Phantom of The Opera, Music of the Night, Think Of Me, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Prima Donna, and The Point of No Return. While it does fit, storywise, I can't help but feel that LND feels like a sequel struggling to recapture the magic of the original, and for the most part failing to do so.

obviously ALW had NO CLUE as to why the POTO worked so wonderfully well, because he never would have released this drivel if he had any kind of clue at all....very sad

reply

Oh, shut up. ALW did a great and wonderful thing making Love Never Dies. It's a very good sequel.

I love you, Kristen Stewart. :) You are so beautiful and talented. I would love to perform with you.

reply

This repulsive sequel should never have been staged.

reply

I agree. It's compete trash that ruined the characters and destroyed the beauty of the original. It's no wonder it was a Broadway flop and is no longer running. Like so many others, I pretend this show doesn't exist.

reply

Oh ummmmmmmmmmmm, except it hasn't been to Broadway yet, and it is currently running in Germany, and has been running all over Europe since it opened and is scheduled for a US tour next season.
