Is the phrase *beep* a derogatory word in Spain? It is in the USA....

I enjoyed the movie, but found the casual use of the word *beep* to characterize the gay men on board the plane offensive. Isn't that word derogatory in Spain? It is in the USA...

Thanks!

Not really.

It's derogatory but it's more the equivalent of sissy. Sometimes used affectionately/self-mockingly.

Hi sartor, I think the crux of the matter lies in the fact that in Spain
(and the rest of Europe) political correctness in casual conversation is
not such a serious issue as it's in USA.
Beep, beeeeeep!!!, :)

reply

The US should toughen up and stop being a sissy when hearing "phaggot." The US is such a sissy for it.

reply

if it' used in a hateful way towards someone, then yes. but since the characters are gay and they're saying it to each other, i guess it's considered a term of endearment.

Is like the N-bomb in the US, if a black man say it to another black man there´s no problem. The same happens with this word betwen gay men, if an hetero say that to a gay man it´s considered offensive.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

It did seem to be used in a derogatory way when Joserra starts weezing when the passengers are let in to the cockpit (just after the psychis scene witht he pilots) and the woman says to Joserra "breathe through your nose *beep*
