I agree. Quality is important. I say this as a both an Anglophone and Hispanophone viewer, Almodovar is great and one of my all-time favourites, but with this film, I think it shows that he has already peaked.

3. I think it sucks for a director to be expected not to feature his own life in all of his movies. Don't think any straight directors come across the demand that they make a movie without any straight characters every once in a while. Same goes for gay writers or singers or any other field of art.
