I think it was a little too much to knock Winston and his gf ..

On their wedding day?? That really hit something on me. I expected at least Winston to come out alive.

I expected him to live as well. I thought it was a good twist of events though.

Yeah indeed, a great game over all.

winston and peggy were such bros. winstons speech in the car before they meet uncle po and when peggy talks about him changed my opinion about him, he was actually a decent guy (aside from the gang thing).

satisfying deaths for their killers though.

Getting to hunt down and bring the dicks who were behind it to Mrs. Chu for a little knife action was damn satisfying -- precisely because I liked Winston and Peggy so much by that time.

I agree it was a powerful moment and made me really want to avenge his death, I gotta give credit to the developers for making characters I really care for.

even more impressive considering how little time you actually spend with them, especially Peggy. you only really spend one mission with her (she isn't in any prior scenes and you barely see her alive at the wedding) but she's written and voiced so well that her death hits hard

For me it was because of how much they were able to put into her character, as far as where she stands in the whole "triad" situation.

She loves Winston. She understands that Winston sometimes has to engage in illegal activities -- but also that he treats his people like brothers. What he does isn't just for his own benefit, and Peggy knows this. For that reason, she welcomes Wei as if he is a brother -- a new member of the family.

The fact that the mission was actually more like three-in-one really worked to the character's benefit. You could see how excited she was for her wedding, how the preparations for it were draining. More importantly, as Wei you got to be a part of a few important wedding activities (getting the cake, getting the centerpiece, taking Peggy to her fitting), which only added to the emotional investment you put in as a player. Along the drive, you also had a chance to talk on a more serious level than just ordinary chatter. Peggy asked about Wei's sister, Wei talked about his mother and her aversion to him dating white girls, and so on.

Really by the end, it felt like you had gained a new sister. Peggy had even offered to set you (Wei) up with a "nice girl," once you felt ready to settle down.

Overall, that is a TON of meaningful story packed into one mission. Looking back on it, I'm impressed that the writers were able to get that much content into a single mission and still have it feel as if the pacing was perfect. Usually trying to cram that much narrative into a short space can come off feeling rushed.
