I didn't understand the final scene. I saw the letter opener/sword burning in the furnace, but what was the significance?

I know that the factory appeared earlier in the film, but I can't remember why and who this pointed to as the killer?

It's been a while since I've seen the movie. All I remember is that the ending is ambigous but mostly points at GONZALO as the possible killer.
