Julie was mean

It is one thing to go to the bully when she was friends with Harlan. It is even worse that she rubbed his face in it, by having the bully come over with that phony bologna apology. Ridiculous.

I think the former bully really meant that he was sorry. Kids are rarely written in stone, they can change.

But I agree about Julie. She never had been nice to Harlon and her newfound Stepford Student attiude didn't change anything. Just a careless, selfish girl with no real empathy.

I mean, why not just "Snuffcarcass"?

I loved her character. It was either perfectly written or perfectly acted, or maybe both, but her character reminded me so much of certain girlfriends and crushes that I had growing up. Her dancing against the jock at the party was purposely trying to get Harlon to react so that he'd see her as more than a friend and push him to make a move. When she tells Harlon that she didn't even kiss the jock, she's basically saying, "I like you, not him", without having to say it out loud.

The conversion to christian also rang true for me, having grown up in southern Alabama where, as kids, we'd go to lock-ins pretty regularly whether we were inclined to be saved or not. A lock-in is basically a church sponsored sleepover where their goal was to "save" as many kids as they could. Most of us went for the chance to have a sleepover with girls we liked and an opportunity to get to know them and socialize where anywhere else at that age is sorta awkward. But others bought into it and would really make a change and take christianity seriously if only for a little while.

I thought the Julie character was perfectly realized.

Oh, she was very well drawn, and beautifully acted. Full marks there to everyone involved!

I just couldn't stand her.
