they nicked the opening of 'League of Gentlemen'

Couldn't believe they nicked the opening gag of "League of Gentlemen" series 1, episode 1 with the guy reading a note as we hear a voiceover of the person who wrote the note reading it aloud which turns out not to be a voiceover but a woman next to him, just out of frame.

Yeah I noticed that as well...but I have to wonder, did the League come up with it themselves? I've no idea.

I'm sure I've seen that gag more than one place before. I wouldn't at all be surprised if it was in an old Python bit and that might not have even been the first time it was put to film.

I'm not certain that League originated it, but it just seemed to me that "League of Gentlemen" used it as an opening statement in a winning way and that said show is famous and recent enough in memory that I'd think others in the British comedy scene would avoid doing that particular signature gag.

I enjoyed "Touch of Cloth" by the way, just a minor quibble.

Think it was first used in 'Top Secret' when Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) is reading the note from his agent.

Yup. 1984. One of the more underrated Z.A.Z films.
