Maybe this would have made a good sketch, but 2 hours!?

Been well plugged and clearly had a decent budget thrown at it, but jesus this is painful. Who thought this would be a good idea after reading the script?

reply

I expected more from Charlie Brooker, but its just not very clever. The dig at Luther made me laugh, but thats about it.

Shame, as I love the cast.

Brilliant!! Funny, very simple and yet Clever

reply

Comedic tastes obviously differ a great deal, I thought it was it pretty funny. A very British take on the old Police Squad series.

reply

I thought it was awful. Parody ; the lowest form of humour. Which part spoofed Luther btw? Because that's genuinely watchable telly. This? Yeesh. It felt 20 years out of date. More and more I wonder why people think Brooker is some kind of genius.

reply

Wow. Maybe it was just one of those speak without thinking moments but I just read an interview with John Hannah that makes him seem like a bit of an a-hole!
Ok, he has to hype 'Cloth'....still. Talking about the types of show being spoofed he says "“I think to try to find anything that has been an original cop show, you have to go back to The Sweeney.

“Everything has become an imitator of the rogue, maverick cop with a drinking problem and no relationships and a funny car.”

Really? Does he intend to return his cheques for McCallum? Out Of The Blue? REBUS for that matter......? The next time he's offered work as a cop, will the writers be thinking 'hang on, that means he probably thinks this is a load of *beep* right?' What's he saying? All cops shows are bad - except for the ones he made..........?

As ITV news looks more like the 20 year old Day Today every year, the station is not blessed with a great sense of irony or self awareness. So I doubt Hannah will have any trouble getting signed up in a new series as a maverick cop, who bends the rules but gets results.

reply

To me Brooker can be as bad as the people/shows he hates.

The joke was when they entered the house at the beginning and he told Ann to put her hands in her pockets so she doesn't touch anything, (like Ripley is told by Luther) then someone throws them some gloves.

Because that's obviously what you'd wear in a crime scene! Other than that, Luther is great!

"Flatly My Dear, I Don't Riverdance"

reply

I've seen that in other cop show crime scenes besides Luther.

reply

Comedy as with everything is subjective. I enjoyed it whereas I watched the first two episodes of Luther and thought it was completely devoid of credibility. The character was constantly bubbling under the surface and barely able to exercise control of his anger, often resorting to physical violence. The reality is if he was a serving British police officer he would have been sacked a long time before reaching the status of a DCI.

reply

I couldn't watch Luther either (despite being a fan of the lead actors), but for a different reason: I'm sick of the genius mastermind serial killer toying with a master detective cliche. How often does this really happen in real life?

reply

Currently watching it. Halfway through the first episode. Struggling with it... Think I'm going to turn it off.

I'm a big fan of Brooker but this is bad..

reply

The problem with shows like this is that the concept of spoofing something is well out of date now.

Okay, there is a slight difference between the procedural cop shows that are in vogue now, and the shoot-em-up action style cop shows that films like Loaded Weapon 1 sent up. But, still. Have seen Police Files, Naked Gun etc send up cop shows before, and Scary Movie, Airplane et al send up other genres, there wasn't anything new here.

They were marketing it like it was some genius idea, but it wasn't. Anybody can watch a cop show and no it has no bearing on real life police work. I'm not sure I'd watch it again if/when they do make a series either. I've watched it now, and I've got the joke. There was nothing fresh in the original two-parter, why watch more?

Saying that, I watched both episodes and was mildly amused, so it wasn't bad. It's just not as clever as it thinks it is.

reply

It does have moments of sheer brilliance. But equally there are many many duds too. It is far too clever for its own good, and seems to think spoofing cop shows is somehow unique.

I also felt a touch embarrassed for John Hannah. I have been a big fan of his for many years, and particularly enjoyed his portrayal of Quintus Batiatus from "Spartacus - Blood & Sand" quite recently. He can be a humorous man, but I felt this show, and particularly the script, were beneath him in terms of stretching his formidable acting talent.

But overall it was a decent way to spend 2 hours, although I seriously hope this won't be commissioned into a tv series. It just doesn't have the legs for it.

And I looked & I beheld a pale horse & the name that sat on him was Death & Hell followed with him.

reply

so it wasn't bad. It's just not as clever as it thinks it is.

That's it exactly. It had some funny bits, but it was a little too smug.

"Flatly My Dear, I Don't Riverdance"

reply

Yes, I agree. I doubt it will last more than a season.

reply

I liked it and I am a big Brooker fan. There were some misses in it but there were a lot of hits too. Really silly parts like the bit where the doctor is screaming at him to get out of the victim's hospital room or when he is shooting at the rain in a display of angst really had me laughing.

"If only we hadn't stopped at Nandos on the way!"

reply

I bloody loved it.

"What's the matter Colonel Sanders - CHICKEN?"

reply

Me too.

I can't help it if I like something.

reply

And me.

I guess I'm not as clever as I think I am either.. :(

"Football in the groin, football in the groin"

reply

I agree, I don't think its entirely original. I'm a huge fan of the Airplane! and I noticed the similarities almost immediately, so yeah it's not most original or the smartest comedy but still I enjoyed it. I didn't take it too seriously after all it's just a silly spoof

reply

Thought it was very funny. A welcome change from some of dreck currently gracing our screens.

"Ah da da dah, like this in the background. What the *beep* is it with you?"

reply

I love Charlie Brooker, but I just couldn't get past 20 minutes of this. It's a shame because I wanted to love it because ... Charlie Brooker.

I'm not going to say that this is bad because it's entirely subjective, clearly lots of people love it, but it just didn't do it for me. Sorry Charlie.
