Yeah, wasn't bad. Silly, fun. Not quite shut off your brain fun, because there were a lot of back ground gags one would only catch if they were paying attention. But definitely Zucker bros style of humor. (yes, humor, yank ex pat here in London :P )

Yeah, exactly what I thought when watching it.

I thought it as very funny and well observed - particularly enjoyed the way it was played dead straight.

Hope they make more of them, would be a great series if they can keep it up

Funny British comedies are rare these days (hell, funny comedies of any origin are rare these days) but I though this was hilarious. As you, say took clear influence from Police Squad but added a nice British spin to it.

I wonder how many of the gags were actually direct replicas of items from Airplane / Police Squad / Naked Gun / Top Secret.

About 99.9%?

With 0.1% pussy jokes a la "Are you being served?"

I loved the Zucker bros style of humour so much, I'm glad someone is reviving it. The thing I like about it is there's a constant effort to make the viewer actually laugh regularly, which is the point. I've watched self-labled comedies that seem to be about slightly awkward situations or mildy curious scenarious, it's great that we're getting back to actual laughter.

Of course, humour is one of the most subjective things in the world, but I personally like this.

The official website for the show includes this quote:

Daniel Maier, co-writer, commented: “It’s like Airplane! for a detective series except for not being Police Squad”.

The quote is on the "About" page at http://sky1.sky.com/a-touch-of-cloth/a-list-talent-joins-charlie-brook ers-detective-spoof-a-touch-of-cloth

So, I guess the writer(s) of the show are fully aware of the similarities. I think the show is hilarious! It's been a long time since I've seen this kind of parody. The genre got pretty worn out by the end of the '80's with all of the sequels. It's a good time to revive it. When the first series came out last year I started watching it without having any idea what it was about or that it was a comedy. It was an excellent way to watch it! As I recall, the first few minutes were pretty straight and then it got progressively loony. I'm used to seeing John Hannah play dramatic parts so I completely bought into the idea that it was a serious police procedural. A few minutes into I was thinking WTF?! Lol! I haven't had the opportunity to introduce the show to anyone who hasn't seen it, but if I did I would recommend that they just start watching it without reading anything about it first.

I do find that I end up pausing a lot (and rewinding) to read the props. There are some very funny signs and posters and even people in the background reading newspapers with funny headlines. Sky should sell reprints of the best posters from the show. I cracked up reading the chalkboard wine list at the Sappho restaurant in episode 1 of the 2nd series. It was only visible for a second at the beginning of the scene. It amazing how much effort they put into things like that. I wonder if the writers of the show also write/describe those props?

This just reminded me that last week my younger brother's fiancé recommended "Airplane!" to me. I told her I've already seen it several times and the first time was in the theatre when it came out. She replied, "Wow! I wasn't even, like, born then!" Grrrr. (At least I was only 7 when it came out, which makes me feel a bit better about it. Actually, I'm pretty grateful that I was born in the 70's and got to experience a lot of great years that Reagan Babies -Thatcher Babies? -and younger missed out on!)

Yup.

It is funny, though!

The New York Rangers suck. And Sidney Crosby is a cry baby!

Despite what the writer said.

This is influenced heavily by Airplane and the Zucker bros. Whose films I love.

This is slightly different. Not better. Just a slightly different take

There are plenty of times it is wittier and not so obvious. It is darker, grittier and John Hannah plays a smarter character than Leslie Nielsen. John Hannah is a very funny actor. Leslie Nielsen was brilliant in his ability to say the stupidest or most absurd things with complete conviction.
Both are wonderful actors, who are fun to spend time with.

I am glad it is not a Zucker rip off. It may be influenced but isn't derivative and takes the genre and breathes new life into it.

For that "reviewer" on the front page of this. I can reassure him. Comedy is the most difficult thing to pull off.

All the best
