Edinburgh

I know there was an episode in series 1 which was set in Edinburgh and obviously filmed there; however there was quite a bit of the rest of series 1 clearly shot in Edinburgh, but not supposed to be there (Potterow, Cameron Toll and the Meadows from memory). Now we're into series 2 and last week there was a clip filmed in Rose Street and maybe others I've missed. Just wondered if both series were filmed at the same time or is there any other reason to film in Edinburgh as there doesn't appear to be any Scottish connection among the cast.

Keiths car actually has a Scottish (SY) number plate on it, so I think the whole program could be based in Scotland or the far north

It's definitely supposed to be London.

From what I've read, it's supposed to be set in a "small, south east English town", nowhere specific.
I would assume the fact it is filmed in Edinburgh is due to the BBC's diversification policy - filming in locations other than the all-too-obvious London, and long may that continue. Edinburgh is a criminally under-used location.

Whilst the appearance of the city is very different from SE England, scale-wise it fits the bill in the sense that it doesn't have sprawling skyscrapers or a motorway near the city centre etc.

Other locations have been the St Andrews Square Bus Station, Bruntsfield (fashion shop) and Little France/Craigour (the birthday party) and Morningside/Marchmont (during the Ferris Beuller-style race home by Jamie).

its definitely not suppose to be set in Scotland, they make a big hub-bub about not knowing much about scotland and how random it was visiting there in series one (Mike not knowing that Scotland was in the uk and buying a nessie doll for his mum) but yeh, the University and all around it is frequently shot and Cameron Toll being used frequently.

A couple of years ago, the BBC were ordered to produce more Scottish content. This is why they now film various comedies (Badults, Pramface), just about all quiz shows and dramas (Waterloo Road) etc. up here. Though, they still use predominantly English cast members, contestants etc. Being the mother of a young actress, I had initially thought that 'more Scottish content' was good news, however, it is only of benefit to production staff and extras.

Excellent answer, that explains a lot. I found it really odd that there were a whole bunch of obvious Londoners / SE-Englanders all resident in Edinburgh. I don't even know the city that well and knew this wasn't London or a London suburb!

Still a great series though. I am on S2 E7 on Netflix and wondering where I'll get S3 from!
