Air Force One Down?!?

I was right there with this show ... until Air Force One went down for no apparent reason.

Air Force One is the most heavily inspected, maintained, and flight-worthy jet on the face of the planet. All maintenance and inspections are done by folks from the US Air Force 89th Air Wing, which is considered the hardest non-classified military group to become a part of, as you can only join after being INVITED TO APPLY. Only those with top marks and an impeccable background check are invited to apply, and invitation does not guarantee a spot in their ranks.

The idea that AF1 went down without some sort of attack or disasterous freak-weather condition ... is pretty much preposterous.

It's the worst possible macguffin ever. BAAAAD WRITING!!!

Accidents happen.

Really? Watching it I actually thought, we are lucky this hasn't happened before with the amount of time the president spends in-flight. No matter how well-maintained the air craft....it is subject to disaster just by the nature of it being In The Air.

Accidents do happen all the time.

The Space Shuttle Challenger.....does NASA not know what they are doing?

The Titanic was unsinkable. Right?

I think it's unrealistic to say it could not happen

What I thought was even more ridiculous was the fact the secretary of state just peaced out and went to track down her son and his secret wedding. The entire nation is upside down. so epically stupid. The crash and the reactions of the characters. and i thought this show was pretty good

She's not the acting president and she's a mother first.

It would have been too fantastic and distracting if it was a terrorist attack.

It isn't bad writing for something as plausible, even if improbable, like mechanical malfunction caused the plane to go down.

I like the plot twist simply because it WAS unexpected. I'm always impressed when I don't see it coming and it isn't totally ridiculous.

reply

I liked the twist, but for me it was TOTALLY expected. As soon as he got on that plane, I said to myself.. he's dead. I actually googled the line of succession right after that scene, b/c I wanted to see how far the Sec of State was. I thought that if she was 3rd in line then both the Pres & VP would have died, but after seeing that she wasn't I assumed the Pres would be killed/incapacitated somehow. I still like how they executed it, but it was obvious where they were going with all the foreshadowing.

I loved it, it was totally unexpected. I really need a season 2 of this show!

reply

It wasn't a complete surprise to me because someone accidentally spoiled it for me before I got a chance to watch the finale. But as I was watching the show I still liked the twist and the fact that it didn't happen in the last couple scenes of the episode made me anxious to see what else was going to happen.

However with the way the VP was acting I was wondering if they were going to go the route of having him be behind the alleged accident. Maybe the VP found out that Garcetti was going to oust him in the next election and he wanted Garcett gone so he could become President and have a better shot at winning the next election.

But, since no one knew the cause at the time, EVERYONE would have been considering the possibility, especially the paranoid public, which the press would have jumped on. For the writers to not even toss around the idea until it was debunked was unfortunate.

It was suggested early on that it was a mechanical malfunction. The show simply never showed the public wondering about terrorism while that theory was debunked in between scenes. This was just simpler and quicker.

Why must everyone talk about terrorism. I'd think it'd make the show interesting if the vice president had something to do with it cough cough LBJ

The kind of show where the audience cares about the characters and wants to see what happens next? You're right, it wasn't. The marriage plot line: don't care. Anne-orexia: don't care. The son who never learns his lesson. The alcoholic matriarch with a heart of gold. The cheating husband seeking retribution. The torn journalist who needs a good lay. The gloss-lipped one dimensional up-and-comer. The swooning editors future. Will she run for president? don't care. Stale. Insincere. If only the president flew out of the downed plane as Sylar/Nathan from Heroes and carried it to safety! That'd be more believable than some of the scenes from this show.

Veep makes me laugh from time to time. House of Cards is 1000 times smarter. I wanted to like this show but there was nothing to takeaway. I don't care for any of the creators works so maybe that's the issue. No interest in seeing The Flash either.

Well it happened to the Polish Air Force Tu-154 which crashed and killed 96 people in 2010 including President Lech Kaczyński and his wife Maria, former President Ryszard Kaczorowski, the chief of the Polish General Staff and other senior Polish military officers, the president of the National Bank of Poland, Poland's deputy foreign minister, Polish government officials, 15 members of the Polish parliament and senior members of the Polish clergy. The accident was due to the lack of visibility and the pilots who descended too low without being able to see the ground.

The Polish President was survived by his exact twin brother Jarosław Kaczyński who happened to be a former Prime Minister... Sometimes reality is weirder than fiction.
