Did Phil...

realize he was gay after that incident with Kat's dad? Is that why he suddenly seemed to have lost interest in her?

reply

In the book he slept with her mother so I don't know...maybe. Or maybe he was just feeling guilty. I don't even know why they had to change the ending.

reply

Ugh. That's really unfortunate cause it makes me think it was done just for shock value or for the sake of a twist ending :/

reply

Wow, that's a pretty major alteration to the original story. Phil being gay seemed to fit in the film as he never seemed interested in Kat or her mom, despite overt attempts to seduce him. How different was the book, overall?

reply

It is different in some ways... like her relationship with her mother and the detective is more detailed. And of course the endig is different. There is no gay friend, she had 2 girl friends a fat girl and a cheerleader. The book is much better than the movie in my opinion.

reply

Is he bi or gay in denial? So how does May fit into this? Does the book elaborate on their relationship?

reply

Maybe they changed the ending to make it more interesting? How boring and predictable is it that Phil would be sleeping with Kat's mother? Much better ending in the film.

coming from someone unbiased cuz i havent the read the book, what i took from it was that phill and the father were having an affair for a while, so when she came back from college since he knew he liked men was no longer leading her on, although he never really seemed interested in her at all only pot. maybe in the beginning them having ridiculous amounts of sex was either them being teenagers OR he was trying to convince himself that he still liked women?? im just spit ballin. i had another point but forgot once i started talking how much teens like boning. ill stop.

reply

I think he was in the closet and he wanted to convince himself he wasn't gay.
