One of the most unlikeable leads in a movie

I guess I'm biased because I've always been a bit put off by Shailene Woodley. But there were so many times I wanted to slap her character in the face.

That is because she is a good actress. You are supposed to feel that way about her. She is head and shoulders above Eva Green, but I suppose anyone could have played the role of a crazy mother. She reminds me a bit of Howard Stern.

Are you a girl? I don't know any guy who would agree with you. Unless you think Howard is pretty.

Edit: Never mind I just saw this:

I mean, I don't think she was supposed to be super likable or charming. But still, ugh. You could see how she was taking after her mother (or at least her perception of her mother). Dating a sweet, attentive guy at college and treating him like crap.

What the f--k are you talking about?

I'm in agreement happyphantom9. I never cared much for the actress either, and it doesn't help that the character isn't likable on top of that. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but there is just something about Woodley that's off-putting. She doesn't seem far removed from her character in this film. I hope that I'm wrong... maybe she is a sincere, pleasant person, but she doesn't come across that way. I feel the same way about Chloe Grace Moretz and Ben Affleck... it's like there is a bratty, smugness that's always bubbling just underneath the surface, and it's especially irksome when one of them gets cast in a movie that I'd otherwise enjoy. For example, I love everything about the movie Chasing Amy, except for Ben Affleck... whenever he appears onscreen it's comparable to nails on a chalkboard. He's so blank faced and un-emotive, spoiling an otherwise enjoyable film.

I actually understand where they're coming from. In my humble opinion, Shailene Woodley is not a very good actress and, therefore, her on-screen presence is somewhat off-putting to say the least.

"I love everything about the movie Chasing Amy, except for Ben Affleck..."

I think you mean Gone Girl and I strongly disagree. It was actually one of the few times when I actually enjoyed seeing Affleck on screen. During the whole movie he had this subtility that I just can't describe but that really convinced me in his performance. It was like if I knew that he was totally not guilty (even though many details in the movie showed it as well, just with the way Affleck dealt with it added something special). Of course Amazing Amy was the strongest point and performance of the movie, but Affleck did handle it with care as well imo.

no he meant Chasing Amy

You're either a 14 year old boy who has yet to get to 2nd base or a jealous flat-chested female.

They are obviously real by the way they shift when she moves. I've seen many implants in my day, and hers are definitely not.

Stop drinking the Haterade.

He never said her breasts.

But they are definitely real as they are fairly small and perky. If she got fake breasts I would imagine she would have gone larger.

reply

You must not mean her breasts. Or you are just completely ignorant about surgical enhancements. She looked like a normal young girl that has been particularly lucky in the genetics department.

reply

Yeah, that is part of the point.

reply

I thought was what made her performance feel real. She was kind of an as sho le sometimes, like real people are. She reminded me of many kids I have known with a *beep* home life.

"Unlikeable" is kind of a vague term. She's HARD TO LIKE, but not entirely unsympathetic. A lot of teenage girls are like that, and even more so if they're intelligent. Besides "likeable" is kind of an overrated quality in fictional characters.

I don't quite get the Howard Stern comparison. He is funny sometimes, but "likeable" doesn't really enter it one way or another. Also, I've never wanted to titty-*bleep* Howard Stern. But Shailene Woodley?--well...

Every movie I have seen her in, she was very annoying.
