Dumbest motive to kill someone ever

Worse murder scene ever. That was so stupid. If I was the author of this book I would be infuriated that they changed the ending THAT MUCH. It makes so much sense that he would kill her for sleeping with Phil. And that he would catch her in bed with Phil, lose his *beep* and kill her. But for HER to catch HIM in bed with Phil, start laughing and then he starts strangling her because shes laughing...and then immediately starts crying right when she dies even though he seemed to be in complete control of his actions and then 10 seconds later makes a face of "omg what have I done??" that was the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Also that just isn't enough motive for him to kill her. If he was the one having the affair.......hes the one who's gay and keeping something from her. Yeah, keeping the ending from the book is super predictable, and I had predicted (the body in the freezer) and the affair with Phil very early on, but it still would have been a great ending to a good story. Why on earth did they think that change was ok and how did it pass? That is just honestly one of the worst scenes I have ever seen in my life. The way he killed her and why. Stupid...

reply

It made sense because she was laughing at him and he was completely embarrassed. She shouldn't of laughed at him and instead just walked out and closed the door, It was none of her business.

I was dying of laughter when she walked in on the two of them though, Hilarious!

Are you? You clearly didn't understand the scene. The mother was a complete whacko and I felt no sympathy for her, While her husband may've been gay, He treated her with upmost respect while she showed him absolutely nothing and didn't even love the guy. And she WAS laughing at him because he was gay and therefore she lost her life. She brought it all on herself in the end.

reply

No, I believe you didn't understand the scene. Either that or you're a troll. And how was her walking in on her *husband* having sex with a teenage boy none of her business?

reply

And not just any teenage boy. Their daughter's boyfriend.

Wildcattin'...Wildcattin'. Pow! I'm gonna go.

I don't think the mom was a wacko at all. The whole movie was shown through the eyes of Kat, she even narrarrated the whole thing. So, in my opinion, the characters of the mom and dad we're mostly through her own perceptive. She saw her mom as crazy for no reason and her father as a perfect husband but a whimp. The whole movie they show him as the victim, but in the end I think that we realise that the mother was indeed the victim and what we saw was from Kat's perceptive. I saw the ending with the mom laughing, not as her laughing AT him, but laughing at herself. Laughing at her life and to me it looked like she was relieved. He however perceived the laughter as being directed towards him and become enraged.

reply

A guy murders his wife and it's the victim's fault?

Margaret Atwood — 'Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.'

you're an idiot.

Although I agree that it was a dumb ending, I didn't have a problem with the motivation. He didn't kill her because he was laughing at her. He killed her because she was going to ruin him. Keep in mind that being a closeted, middle-aged gay in 1988 is very different than it is today. Furthermore, I believe Phil was a minor.

So it's 1988, and your wife -- who pretty clearly hates you -- catches you having gay sex with a minor. She could have turned him into the cops. She could have told his friends and employer. It would have been rough.

Furthermore, there were a few references to his temper (ex. setting the trash can on fire).

Definitely a stupid ending, but the motive wan't the problem.

Honestly, it looked like an emotional snap, to me. He has been emasculated by Eve for years. Being laughed at in this situation just caused a fuse in his head to blow. That's why he was irrationally yelling at her to shut up even though she clearly couldn't even breathe.

reply

^ I'm gonna go with this and what Onthemoon said. She had emasculated him for the better part of 20 or so years and he had a violent temper. Also, her laugh at the end also seemed to be an extreme emotional response. Her charms apparently didn't work on her husband because he was gay and the boy she had her eyes on was his lover. Instead of getting angry or sad she just had to laugh at how ridiculous it all was. As for him crying, it's quite possible that he still loved his wife. He just wasn't sure how to make her feel wanted since he wasn't sexually attracted to women at all.

I actually think the ending is more poignant than the cliche of the alcoholic, slutty mother being killed by the husband after he catches her with her lover.

reply

i agree with the OP in that that was HIS CHOICE to be married to a woman. and to feel emasculated? why not leave? or stand up for yoursef? he was the one cheating. he was the one lying to her and making her feel neglected, which made her depressed which made her drink and want to cheat. it was all his fault, for not stepping up and being a person of respect and dignity and if he cant come out of hte closet at least leave. its ridiculous to blame the wife about that. for years she treated him badly? really? he wasnt being a husband and giving her any love cause hes gay. and then he kills her?? its heartbreaking and infuriating. i hate the dad. and felt bad for the mom. the ending was silly in that shes laughing, and instead of of just leaving, or tellig her to stop, or pushing her out or asking her to leave he is once again a coward and starts strangling the woman he treats like a beard, and is so angry while strangling her and then starts crying literally the second she dies. like what did he expect? he didnt stop. he kept going til she was going t die he knew what he was doing. its like he wanted to kill her and knew it was going to happen then still had the nerve to cry a second after he killed her. bad ending! i like the books ending.

You should stay with "The Avengers" or "X-men", movies that require less thinking on people's mindset.

Classics are names that everyone heard, yet most have never seen!!

reply

you're an idiot. OP makes total sense.

THIS. Thank you!

reply

The film is related to a missing person and its effects, so to specify, discuss the murder, including who when why and how there is now no mystery left in this movie. No interest to watch now. Thanks OP... maybe you could have posted spoiler???

Anyone who still has faith in humanity has never been to the imdb boards.

reply

Um, exactly-- you seem to know what the film is about so if I put "Dumbest motive to kill someone ever" in the headline, and you haven't seen it yet---why would you read this??? Yes next time I will put spoiler, but take some responsibility in your own actions dude, come on. What did you think I was going to be talking about??

reply

People coming to IMDb message boards BEFORE seeing something should learn how to take responsibility for their own actions. There shouldn't even BE a spoiler tag.
