when Kat found his secret porn stash, if he were a closeted gay guy, wouldn't he have gay porn? And I did not buy the ending. They showed no hints that he and Phil had made the slightest connection. Cheap "shocker" ending.
Are you homosexual? If not then you could not possibly understand what might go through the mind of one when looking for porn entertainment or stimulation or a sexual romp.

I'm talking about the story, not about what goes through the minds of homosexuals.
For the narrative to make sense, in that they are portraying the father as gay, it didn't follow that he had heterosexual porn hidden. If that porn were not hidden, that would have made sense because he wanted his family to think he was heterosexual.
Are you saying you think a homosexual cannot enjoy heterosexual porn? If not then what?
Maybe you aren't a husband and father, but I would think most husbands and fathers would not want to leave his stash of porn easily visible by his family.
Plus the movie does not necessarily portray him as a closet homosexual, maybe the intent was to hint that he is bisexual. Or maybe he is supposed to be heterosexual but for some reason drawn to experiment with this particular young male on a one-off basis and just got caught!?
My first point still remains, if you are not homosexual then you cannot have a good idea what a homosexual might do in the situations portrayed in this fictional story.

What I was really saying was that, if they wanted to give narrative clues about his character, showing his specifically hetero porn collection was insufficient information. I wasn't starting a discussion about the inner workings of homosexual mens' fantasies.
I think you COMPLETELY missed what he meant. He's talking about the story. You are strangely aggressive with your answer. And you can have a GOOD idea of what a homosexual would do without being a homosexual yourself, no need to be a genius for it, unless you have an IQ of <80
Yes, he could have been. It's just that they made space in several scenes to indicate the mom's interest in her daughter's boyfriend, and gave almost no time to show what the dad was into, except to show his porn collection. Yes, I get that they wanted the surprise ending. But even if he were bisexual, they didn't really explore that either.
That's what I thought too. If a straight male looked at porn of both a woman AND a man (who he wouldn't be attracted to), why couldn't a gay guy look at the same porn?
He definitely could... though when heterosexual people look at male/female porn, they usually align with a male/female pairing orientation rather than a same-sex orientation. And if the film makers were including the porn as a trope or character point, the general indication would point to a hetero man. As far as how gay men are generally presented in film/tv, it features gay porn as an indicator.
In the 50s, someone made movies with twisted enings that had no hint, no slightest connection with the prime story. People called it classic, I called it poor writting. The guy's name was Hitchcock.
Classics are names that everyone heard, yet most have never seen!!
There were some very subtle hints to the fathers homosexuality.
1. I noticed the men in the pornography Kat found.
2. All the ladies at the office loved him, but it always he implied he was faithful to his wife.
3. Even though Kat was comfortable with it, he didn't want May to sleep over.
4. The incident the police officer described about their former neighbours could have meant many things...ie Eve DID have a thing for the neighbour man and the father panicked at losing his 'beard'. Or the two men were having an affair and the neighbour did something to upset Mr. Conners so he threw the trash can...the neighbour could have told the police that he was jealous because of the wife, covering up for himself as well.
Well, he was quite repressed, as evidenced by his reaction to being discovered with Phil by his wife. It is possible that he was deeply in denial and would get straight porn magazines because that was what he felt like he should be doing. As others have pointed out the magazines did seem to feature men and women in sexual acts so it could easily be a way for him to get supposedly straight porn that features guys and really get off on seeing them whilst ostensibly enjoying some heterosexual porn the way god intended.
That's what's great about the ending: the element of surprise. Would you have preferred an unbelievably predictable/boring ending? Not to mention, they do hint towards it subtly with things like neither the father nor Phil ever wanting to have sex with their girlfriends.
