A heartwarming yet unsatisfying ending (spoilers)

I'd like to say that I absolutely loved this movie because it felt like a really well made indie production. It sometimes felt slightly half-baked, but -- and this may sound cliché -- the heart and soul was there and it delivered a very good message about a serious topic in high school and society in general, via a light tone.

The actors playing Russell and Kevin are, hands down, one of the most adorable on-screen gay "couple" I've ever seen so far. I'm 23 but I got that damn butterflies-massacring-your-stomach feeling whenever they had scenes together.

While the ending was quite heartwarming, I just hated seeing Kevin walk away from Russell. I really wanted that final kiss and hug between them to happen, like typical rom-com "dramedies" tend to end. But at the same time, I understood Kevin's decision not wanting to come out publicly just yet (most likely due to insecurity, like any gay teen -- hell, any teen has experienced).

Overall, a solid little film. Wish it had come out when I was coming out.

Oh, and another thing: Does anyone recommend similar books like Geography Club? I haven't read any gay-themed YA novels but any recommendations are well received. Should I read the GC book, also?

I'd definitely recommend books by David Levithan. He often writes about gay protagonists and his stories are quite positive and uplifting. Check him out! :)

For gay novelists, I recommend JAY BELL, his books are great, one is series Something Like Summer'and is told by different character prospectives. Kamikaze Boys was single outing and great!

It was bittersweet -- but realistic in the way it needed to be.

Coming out is still a massive step that requires a great deal of courage. You never know how people will take the news, if your friends and family will be accepting, etc. A friend of mine came out to me and I could tell how scared he was that I would freak out. I felt bad that he didn't tell me sooner.

It took a long time for him to work up the courage to be honest about himself in an open way. It's not a step that everyone is ready to make out of the blue. Kevin is one of those people that will probably need a lot more time before he is finally ready to come out, and showing that onscreen just reaffirmed that revealing your homosexuality is different for everyone. Some people are ready for it earlier than others.

My take was that the ending felt rushed. There was so much more to cover. Kevin walking away from Russell needed to result in his feeling the weight of that decision, which we should have seen. And Russell got over it way too easily. The gay support group became a GSA out of nowhere (with the sign outside saying the latter, despite the flyers), which undercut the idea "if you go in there, everyone will know". Gunnar and Trish are on board out of nowhere. What, he tried to talk Kimberly out of her flyers but didn't bother saying anything to Russell before or after? Gunnar supporting him fully without a second thought only works if it happens as soon as the issue comes up.

I still really liked it, but adding ten minutes and not rushing the end could have made me love it.
