Godawful ending

Oh man, the movie was okeish till that cheap cop out ending.
They had to just leave it open did it ? Cant make a sequel without an retarded open ending. But choke on it everybody involved in production, the movie flopped, no sequel.

Should have ended with him deciding to make or not the movie and trying to come with terms with this not with that cheap asylum scene that makes no sense at all.

reply

What about it makes no sense? It was extremely apparent that Evie had transferred herself into him.

reply

What makes no sense ?

How about the film being destroyed, him going insane randomly even through he stayed pretty sane up till the end.
And him gaining some magical abilities, wtf was the deal with that.
As for your "possession" claim, it makes even less sense.
Why would she posses him, and when did she gain that ability.
Why kill herself only to posses someone else when she obviously has her own body.
Why posses someone if she wanted to die ? It makes no sense for her character and what we learn about her throughout the movie.
Also why posses someone and make him go into a mental institution, whats the point, it makes absolutely no sense.

Why a girl with supernatural powers with memory loss and insane self hatred, jealousy loneliness and regret would turn into a evil scary ghost.
If she wanted to be "with" him she could just not kill herself and leave the home together. It contradicts the scene before it in every possible way.

reply

Just... wow.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

The film getting destroyed? Hello?!?! Do you remember anything at all about a FIRE? If that doesn't cut it for you, I'm pretty certain someone with demonic powers could take care of it.

Gaining magical abilities? Like was already stated, Evey "possessed" him. pretty easy to figure that one out.

She would possess him to continue "living" inside another body because she was going to be burnt to a crisp. She always had that ability. It was clearly stated she was born with demonic powers. Did you pay any attention to the stuff about the cult?

Evey didn't kill herself. The part of her that was Jane was trying to kill her. Why possess someone else? Because her body was going to be burnt to a *beep* crisp.

She didn't make him go into a mental institution. Don't you think the authorities would have been involved in that? There was also nothing claiming it to be an institution. How do you know it wasn't a holding room in a police station or something similar? Why would they have let him have the camera he was holding if he was in an institution?

There was no evil scary ghost.

'Jane' wanted to be with him not Evey herself, and 'Jane' knew that she could never be with him because she was actually Evey & would eventually end up killing him anyway. Again... 'Jane' killed Evey. Not Evey killed Evey.

There's no wonder this movie has a lower score than that crap of a simplistic 'film' Oculus. It's because The Quiet Ones has an actual story that makes them have to think.

reply

Do you remember anything at all about a FIRE?

No i dont since the scene cuts half way through for a cheap dramatic effect.
We have no idea what got burned down and what didnt other than that one room.
Evey "possessed" him.

Your interpretation, not directly stated in the movie, to me he turned into harry potter out of nowhere.

And you dont answer my question, why kill herself if she wanted to live with someone else, it makes no *beep* sense. Your idea of her being afraid for his life flies right out the window the moment she sets the house on fire. She is as selfish as ever at that point.
Evey isnt another person, its still her, just full of hate, regret, denial and jealousy. By the end she realizes she is the one in control not some evil spirit or someone else. how will killing herself solve that ? She obviously didnt make peace if she feels the need to ruin someones else life.
At no point we have an indication she has a split personality, and the cult stuff is nothing more than a momentary filler theory that gets swept under the rug 5 minutes later as the plot rushes towards that stupid ending.
Are the any demonic powers involved, who knows, who cares, the writers certainly didnt.

One of the reasons why this movie has a low score, among many, is that at the end it throws all the character development we had so far out the window for a cheap jump scare. Its pissing me off that we finally see her come to terms with what she is and what are her sins only for it to be instantly negated.
On that matter how arresting the only survivor of a fire who barly got away himself (how he got away, he seems heavily burned ?), and claiming he is a murderer makes any sense.

reply

It's all really not difficult to understand. You're trying to look too far into things when they are right in front of your face. To shut down the dual personality aspect is absolutely ridiculous, as is the possession of him in the end. Do you really need to be TOLD things in every movie you see? When I'm told something directly it personally makes me feel like the director/writer/whoever is automatically thinking the audience are complete idiots and need to be told. Of course she had dual personalities. Why do you keep mentioning something about an evil spirit/ghost? There is nothing in the movie that implies anything of the sort. Period. So just throw that entire thing out the window. I DID answer your question... it was the Jane personality that wanted Evey dead. Regardless of the fact they are the same person, the two personalities were clashing at the end. Similar to how the majority of exorcism movies have the possessed person fighting the demon and they switch back and forth between the demon & themselves. Only difference is Evey/Jane are the same person. No one is "possessed" until the end. And the guy had smoke coming out of his hands exactly like Evey did - no wizards involved. LMao! Try watching with the commentary track. My fiance is rolling her eyes at you not understanding, lol. It's obvious man. It really is, and it all makes perfect sense. If the director states something, are you going to say it isn't so?

reply

Do you really need to be TOLD things in every movie you see?

Ofc i do, plot exposition is one of the most important story telling devices.
There is a huge difference between over explaining everything and leaving things ambiguous and confusing. Its the difference between a good and bad director and writer, one can balance those story elements perfectly, one just goes too far in ether direction.

Similar to how the majority of exorcism movies have the possessed person fighting the demon and they switch back and forth between the demon & themselves. Only difference is Evey/Jane are the same person.

This statement makes no sense and is the main logical fallacy you are committing here. There are only 4 possibilities here.

1) One is demonic possession, and we have nothing to back up this theory except last minute scene thrown at us that even when is introduced gets rejected by that professor guy and dosnt explain how jane had controls over those powers a minute later.

2) Split personality, both have powers. Again not much to back it up. At no point in the movie she switches between jane and evey, and the transition at the moment she realizes she is evey is so subtle and smooth that it implies its the same person just one had partial amnesia.

3) She is evil and playing with everybody.
But this makes even less sense, as she is shown longing for human emotion and being jealous and sad and lonely. Also she shows ( or at lest pretends ? ) to not know she is evey, and just realizing it in the last scenes. Also makes no sense for her to kill herself in thsi case,

4) The one the movie implies the most.
She is just a girl with supernatural powers over which she has little control.
Her forgotten sins and memories she dosnt want to remember, self hatred, loneliness, sexual desires, jealousy cause her to subconsciously manifest her powers in self hurting manner. In thsi state she is a danger to others, but mostly to herself, and needs professional help to prevent her suicidal tendencies.
But this theory makes no sense with the very last scene. She obviously longed for peace, and death was the only way out she could face. But suddenly, that guy is possessed by her. And she starts the circle she tried to stop so hard anew.

And as we see nether of those possibilities fits here, since each one is contradicted by one or more scenes in the movie.
The movie is plain up badly written, there are multiple plot holes and contradictions.
Or what i think really did happen here. The original script had her die and him going back to normal life, but when person responsible for the script play was adapting the script, he added that *beep* stupid last scene since open endings are the hot *beep* now in horror movies. Ive seen this happen many times when a hack director gets his hands on a script he himself dosnt understand.
I even went and checked it, and you can see in the credits the script was written by tom de ville, and then changed by the director in adaption. Wanna bet that hack added that last scene ?
It really is, and it all makes perfect sense. If the director states something, are you going to say it isn't so?

I wouldnt trust a guy who cant make a half sensible movie to hold a cup of coffee for me, yet alone to tell me the truth in some commentary.

reply

How about this...there is no possession at the end of the movie (or anywhere else). Evey burned the "devil-worship sigil" onto everyone, a sigil she also had under her lip. What if the sigil granted the powers and everyone else, save Brian, died before their telekinetic powers could manifest? The last scene shows Brian able to produce smoke from his hands because he's had enough time (or traumatized by the fire, as cult Evey was) and the powers manifested.

reply

This is actually the first reasonable explanation for the end of the movie i saw so far.
But its so inconsistent in tone with the rest of it i think the writers wished they came up with that one.

reply

Actually there was quite a bit in the movie to point to demonic possession. Like the entire cult? The ending? The possession of Brian at the end...

reply

Wasn't the idea of an ancient demon mentioned? I figured Evey was possessed by said demon and, when Evey set fire to herself, I thought she did that because she felt horror and guilt for 'allowing' herself to be used as the vessel that locked her family inside the building, thus burning up her entire family (remember, they were that cheery group of satanists.)

Once the demon's Evey-vessel was sure to become too crispy to be a useful instrument anymore, I had the impression that the writer(s) intended for us all to believe the demon would continue its evil-doings by dropping into Brian.

I could very easily be wrong, however, and won't mind a bit if someone points out that I am. The film was so ho-hum to me that I shared my attention to it with a few successful games of Spider Solitaire.

reply

Yeah it was but this plot thread goes nowhere as it is introduced way too late into the story, just minutes before the end sequence.
And is contradicted by the fact she herself controlled the door and set the house on fire, not the demon, showing that she has control over her powers.

Maybe that was writers intention, but sure as hell failed hard. They throw too much contradicting information at us towards the end and leave the viewer confused as to what exactly happened.

Sure, a lot people will just say "must been the devil or something" and ignore the inconsistencies being happy the movie is over, but all i could do is think the movie was a bag of wasted potential and that nothing made sense.

reply

There's no help for you on this I'm afraid. You're over-analyzing way, way, WAY to much about the entire movie & won't accept anyone else's explanation/reasoning outside of your own. Like I said, it's all pretty easy to understand. All I can say now is.... you're doing it wrong. Cheers.

reply

won't accept anyone else's explanation/reasoning outside of your own. L

Just because i cant take seriously your theories that are so full of holes it makes me wonder if you even payed attention dosnt mean i refuse to consider a well argumented explanation to the end of the movie.
You happily ignore any argument i rise against your posts and instead keep on saying "i dont get it". If you cant keep a proper discussion with proper arguments and facts rather than fanwank why bother to respond in the first place ?

And am i over analyzing it or not getting it, decide please.

reply

There you go. Trying to sound intelligent again. Fail.

In a deleted scene, Brian actually brings up a 3rd theory which he states privately into a recording device; that perhaps Evey isn't the manifestation of negative energy from Jane but from everyone; Jane, Krissi, Harry, Coupland, and himself. This may explain why at the end of the film, Brian is also shown to be manifesting negative energy himself.

reply

First off, the Lilitu weren't Satanists, they were demon-worshippers from a Sumerian culture that existed 5,000 entire years BEFORE Christianity, which means their demon predates Satan himself (not that I believe either exist).

Second thing, there is still no evidence of actual demonic possession; as Coupland mentioned it is more likely that Jane was merely manifesting the negative trauma that Evey endured; this is emphasized when it is revealed that Evey is NOT a demon, instead she's Jane's REAL identity.

reply

Except being able to possess Brian at the end who has no powers. That kinda screams demonic possession and not just telekinetic powers.

How about the film being destroyed

What are you talking about? When was the film destroyed?

him going insane randomly even through he stayed pretty sane up till the end.

He didn't "Go insane." He became possessed by the same entity that possessed Jane.

And him gaining some magical abilities, wtf was the deal with that.

See previous answer. His powers come from the same entity as Janes.

As for your "possession" claim, it makes even less sense.

In the framework of the movie, it makes perfect sense. We're not talking real life here.

Why would she posses him, and when did she gain that ability.

The above poster is a little confused. It wasn't Jane\Evie, it was the entity that possessed her.

Why posses someone if she wanted to die ? It makes no sense for her character and what we learn about her throughout the movie.

The entity wasn't fully in control of her all the time. Jane\Evie wanted to die, but whatever entity possessed her does not.

Also why posses someone and make him go into a mental institution, whats the point, it makes absolutely no sense.

It's not like the entity WANTS to be in an institution, but that's where a person acting like they were possessed by a demonic entity would end up. It's not like the entity is all powerful.

Why a girl with supernatural powers with memory loss and insane self hatred, jealousy loneliness and regret would turn into a evil scary ghost.

She didn't. The "evil scary" entity was living inside her. Affecting her mental state.

If she wanted to be "with" him she could just not kill herself and leave the home together. It contradicts the scene before it in every possible way.

Wrong. Because what Jane wants and what the entity possessing her wants are two different things.

OMG, I agree with OP, I think the producers put it in just for the sake of a clichéd shock ending.
