What is this title?

Can someone explain, what is a quiet one? What are the quiet ones? What is this referring to? I remember a scene 2/3rd of the way in when Brian decided to research that occult symbol and he pretended to go out to get more film. One student (presumably an ex-assisstant / student of Coupland?) confronted him and called them The Quiet Ones.

It's bugging me and Google is on vacation.

The movie's so-so. I don't think I'll ever understand what makes it good. I still love Jared Harris dearly and will watch anything he's in.

Anyway, thanks for your input.

I was questioning this as well and this is what I came up with.

I think the doctor/ professor, whoever he was, tested so much on his own son that he died. I think he tested other subjects before Jane and they also died. He was basically torturing his subjects for the purpose of science (the candle). I think that the quiet ones refers to those who died while the professor was trying to prove a scientific point, either from the professors hands, or someone similar. So these "children" are dead...quiet.

Those are my thoughts anyways.

Who were the previous people that died during the experiments you talk about?

"Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people."

What I got from it, is that it refers to the people who help Joseph, his students/assistants. They don't talk about the experiments, don't tell anyone what they're up to exactly.
So other people call them the quiet ones. It's a bit like a secret society in a way.

But we're not stupid - we know we're called Gred and Forge.

Yup. Carangil is right. "The Quiet Ones" is the name created and used by the students on campus, which they use to refer to Joseph and his colleagues. The reason they were dubbed "The Quiet Ones" is because they are very secretive about their experiment and never speak about it.

"The Quiet Ones" are the group conducting the experiments. They're called such because they do not discuss their findings with anyone outside of the group.
